I don't see anything about a mass damper, that doesn't say to much. The only I do see about earthquakes is that they used a very sturdy foundation using "knuckle walls" That should withstand horizontal and vertical movements caused by Earthquakes and typhoons.

point 2 here:

And the foundation is really made out of walls instead of caissons or piles for example.

thanks for that info momo, I never seen this type of foundation before, but I can see where the unbreakable resistance will come from.

I haven't read this entire thread so maybe this point has already been made, but this tower is remarkably similar to the CN Tower, and not the Eiffel Tower as some have stated. Like the CNT, the Sky Tree changes from a multi-point base to a circular form about halfway up, has two observation decks, and is topped by a large broadcast mast. Of course the CN Tower is concrete rather than steel and has been around for +30 years. Tokyo should have gone for something a little more advanced and unique, imho.

Very interesting thank you both very much for your quick responses.

I would have though the huge land prices in the 80s would have affected the large footprint style of building more, I guess it shows how expensive a earthquake proof 2000 footer on that type of soil would be!

Personally I would say the resemalance to the CN is stronger than the Eiffel Tower but then again there are only so many ways you can build a tower
I think the designers here have done a great job and I find the renders visually very pleasing, if the finished Sky Tree matches the renders it will be easily one of the best looking towers around.

Everytime I see those update pics, it honestly do feel like I've skipped few weeks from coma... No kidding the progress is one of the fastest I've seen, definately compared to Freedom Tower, LOL

Definitely, yes, although Freedom Tower is a much larger and more complicated project.

Hi all.

This one is gonna be nice to watch rise. With all the projects being put on hold it's nice to see some that are still progressing - and when it comes to this one, fast.

Looks like some good regular updates too - thanks to the photogs.

スカイツリーToday didn't update for a week, but now it's back. But only with pictures from last week 1/21. But since they are still the best image's around from the blogs they're very worth posting.

Hopefully the daily updates will resume very shortly.

And I also found this plan for the ground level:
