I love the height of this tower, and what looks like its intricate all-steel construction.
I'm disappointed, though, that Tadao Ando - such a gifted and noted architect - has produced a tower that looks so rigidly simplistic.

In an age where computers are helping architects produce really interesting new designs for iconic new buildings, this tower seems to be a bit behind the curve. Look at Guangzhou's new tower, for example, which manages to be both industrial and graceful looking, and feels like a fresh update on a familiar theme.

It will be fun to see this one go up, though. The speed of progress with the steel is impressive.

This is pretty much always true with Japanese modern architecture (except very few obvious exceptions like Mode Gakuen), but ECNOMICS COMES FIRST NOT DESIGN. That is the very reason why most buildings in Tokyo is boxy and there is no supertall.

Steel goes up fast, how long did the foundation take ?
The project started officially on July 1, 2008, but work on the foundation of the tower began only in August. They finished it early December, so it only took 4 months to complete it.

Big piece they are lifting in one time. If they will do that the whole time, this will rise very fast.

Any idea when the first tower cranes will appear?

Wow! That's pretty fast. It may even get completed before December 2011 since its easier to build with steel.

In World develpment, I expect to see some other languages, as long as they post photos I'll travel to bable-fish. If it's too much trouble just scroll on.

Chill out guys, Japanese001 and I are just talking about the design process. Japanese001 thinks that it is very unfortunate designs should be chosen by the governor/mayor of a city and he would like to see it as a vote or something by the populous. I was saying I agree but that I think you would probably still have bad designs even if you allowed the people to choose. Japanese001 also believes that, more than being a symbol of a city, this tower should have been something the people of Tokyo could love. He was also saying that it's the mayor of Tokyo's fault that no supertall skyscrapers have been built in Tokyo as he doesn't like them and that if he doesn't change none will probably be built (this one being the exception). It really has nothing to do with earthquake-resistant technology.

I can sympathise, but if you leave things to the popular vote - you will almost certainly fail to see leading or cutting-edge designs succeed in competitions. If the Tokyo public doesn't like the Mayor's decisions, they should vote him out of office. It's also sad to learn he doesn't "like" supertall designs.

this tower is built on very small budget, which means the construction work has to be fast.
