The average length of young generations Japanese is almost as much as yours and rising, while yours keeps falling.

Come back in a decade shortie.

Huh, since when are the Dutch shrinking? We just became the tallest in the world last year. (Assuming that somebody that has Assendelft in his location is actually from Holland).

But yes, the Japanese aren't as short as some people still think they are, although that doesn't that you don't see no pretty short young people any more.

Let's throw in a blog update from 5/30, the scaffolding is still climbing.

skytree.reporting.jp/

I'll see if I can squeeze in another real visit to the site this week, before I go home after next weekend.

And a comparison

1 month ago (4/27)

1 month later (5/27)

Will be a nice addition to tokyo... it's just a shame the majority of the landscape is ugly, almost soviet style concrete blocks

Yes, Tokyo IS ugly!
The clear reason is, because aethetics cost. Japanese chose functionality over scenery. City is for living not viewing.

Thats true. Every city should be like this. But don't forget, function and practicality have their own beauty as well

Tokyo is indeed ugly, even some of the new buildings are very bad. For example the new office block in the middle of Akihabara with it's gold mirror facade, common we ain't living in the 1970s anymore.

But I have to say that most new developments are looking good, especially since they're using more glass for new residential towers. But the older parts of the city are often generation projects waiting to happen.

For the rest is indeed interesting to see that some of the ugliest parts of the city are the most lively (Shibuya, old Shinjuku, Akihabara). I like that because it goes against the opinions of many people here that places can only be lively and successful if they look good.

Yes the first post is old information.

The current planning since the start of construction:

December 2011: (scheduled) construction completion
Spring 2012: (scheduled) grand opening

People here are putting down tokyo... Like 2co said tokyo is a city, not a museum to go and look around. If you want scenic beauty than go to okinawa or hokkaido. Even kobe and kyoto have more scenic beauty.

I dont know of a single example of a large city being better than tokyo in looks. Paris,London all have their nice areas but they also have places that look like a ghetto and tokyo doesnt have this. Manhatten is nice (some parts) but once you go see the other areas of NYC than what? Same thing with even Hong Kong there are alot of "commie blocks". Sky tree is not being made in Shinjuku.

For everyone who is interested in Tokyo please visit this thread. I assure you tokyo isn't as bad as people try to make it.
