i dont think anything can be a tower and a building at the same time. The twoer I'm referring to are freestanding towers like CN Tower and Space Needle and Oriental Pearl Tower.

Burj Dubai is considered a building (emphasis on considered) but if I'm wrong, please tell me. I'm not trying to start a war, but rather im trying to sort things out. xD thx

I agree with Megatower. If my memory serves me right, When the sears tower is the tallest building in the world, the CN tower is the tallest man made structure. If Burj Dubai will be the tallest building in the world (in I think 700M?), then it is both the tallest building and the tallest man made structure. I'm also confused with the tower and building.

This tower will certainly distinguish the Asakusa district - I don't believe there are any particularly striking high rises or skyscrapers in that area. This tower might also fit nicely in the Shinjuku district.

Yes but the Enviromission Solar Tower project here in Australia will take that title from the Burj Dubai. It's uh... a kilometre tall.

I love the design [never saw the first one]. I think it is much better looking than the Guangzhou tower.

The categories break down like this:

1) Tallest structure (any structure at all, whether free-standing or supported) - Radio mast in N. Dakota, USA @ 628 m
2) Tallest free-standing structure (must be free-standing, NOT supported by guy wires) - CN Tower in Toronto @ 553 m
3) Tallest skyscraper/building (must be free-standing, but also be habitable for most of its height) - Taipei 101, Taiwan @ 509 m

All skyscrapers are free-standing structures, but not all free-standing structures are skyscrapers. All free-standing structures are structures, but not all structures are free-standing. Burj Dubai will take all three of these titles as soon as it passes 628 m in height.

(There is also a separate category for underwater structures like oil rigs, but these are also not free-standing as they are partially supported by buoyancy.)
