The Gandhi Medical College building with its striking Regional Mughal Variation was built in 1890 for the supervision and maintenance of the Basheer Bagh Palace and later housed the City Improvement Board. The staircase leads to a corridor and into a high ceiling hall, which in its heyday was full of stucco. Two special features of the building are the rectangular kiosks with domical cupolas that decorate the corners of the parapet and the perforated screens exquisitely rendered in lime-mortar on the back, almost resembling the marble one, the hallmark of Mughal architecture.

Renovated Secunderabad Clock Tower Park thrown open to Public

The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad spent about Rs 1 crore on the renovation of the heritage structure (Clock Tower square). The 2,800 sq m park has been landscaped with lawn grass and hedge plantation in addition to the creation of a waterfall.

Kacheguda Station is architecturally the most beautiful station in South Central Railway. Constructed in the year 1916 by the Nizam of the erstwhile Hyderabad State, this Station was the Headquarters of the then Nizam State Guaranteed Railway.

Endowed with central and side domes a nd accompanying minarets, this station is a marvel in Gothic style of architecture. Towering like a Maharaja’s place, the Kacheguda Station is one of the landmarks in the Hyderabad city. The station handles trains originating for Aurangabad, Tirupati etc. Housing many modern passenger amenities, this station now serves as the Headquarter station of the Hyderabad Division of South Central Railway.

Six landmark buildings from the city selected for the honour

· 24 were short-listed by a jury comprising architects

HYDERABAD: Governor Rameshwar Thakur conferred INTACH Heritage Awards-2006 on six selected buildings of the city at function organised by the INTACH, Hyderabad Chapter on Wednesday.

"The physical structures that have survived the onslaught of nature's fury are our greatest possessions reminding us of our glorious past... These historic buildings are also a testimony to the engineering skills of people at different times," said the Governor…

From 200 nominations, 24 were short-listed and after stringent evaluation by a jury comprising eminent architects… six were declared winners. These included, Arts College, Osmania University, termed `a dream in stone of Hindu- Muslim unity', as it embodies a blend of both Hindu and Islamic architecture. Osmania University Vice-Chancellor M. Suleman Siddiqi received the award.

Head Quarters, 1 EME, Bolaram received the award for its `spotless maintenance'...
The Nizam Club got the award for `sensitive restoration'.
Badshahi Ashurkhana, a house of mourning constructed in memory of martyrdom of Imam Hussain,
Office of the Commissioner Land Administration, located on the Nampally Station Road and the
Garden of College House, MCEME, Trimulgherry, were other recipients.

... Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last of the Nizams, after whom the university was named, said at the opening of the Arts College building “God be praised that this gorgeous edifice is now ready. This structure has no parallel in the world or in India for beauty, grandeur and nobility. The architectural style of the Arts College is like the Urdu language, the manifestation of the Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture and its façade, its pillars and its portals portray the culture an arts of the two people.”

... In short, the Arts College building is a torrent of architectural glory unleashed on the spectator, a freeze on history, an epic in granite, and a marvel of a visual difficult to denote.

Golkonda fort is situated 10 kilometres west of Hyderabad city. Golkonda, meaning shepherd hill, was built consecutively by three dynasties, the Kakatiyas, the Bahmanis and the Qutub Shahis, the major contribution coming from the latter. It betrays the confluence of Hindu and Muslim architectural perceptions of the times. It was the capital of the Bahmani kings first and the Qutub Shahis later for sometime, before they shifted the capital to what is now the old city of Hyderabad. The fort has now become a symbol of the composite cultural heritage of the 400-year-old city.

The fort area on the hill is fenced off by a series of high and broad granite walls built in concentric circles, their defences strengthened by several moats and drawbridges. Legend has it that Golkonda was the centre of a flourishing trade in diamonds and that the world-famous Kohinoor diamond came from this market. The rugged and time-ravaged ruins throw up fleeting evidence of a golden age with Golkonda as its essence. The Qutub Shahis expanded the modest structures built by the Kakatiyas in the thirteenth century into a fortress complex that occupied the entire area of the hill and overflowed into the terrain around it. Its outside wall, around ten miles in length, is designed as a first checkmate to any aggression. The width of the wall ranges from 17 to 34 feet broken by 87 semi-circular bastions, 50 to 60 feet high.

All the four impregnable walls of the fort have huge ornamental wooden doors, opening at the centre with iron spikes driven into them so that elephants of the enemy would baulk at battering them. It took the Qutub Shahis 62 years to build the great fort that was completed in 1525. The complex shows off the incredible engineering and architectural skills, which characterised the golden era of the Qutub Shahis. The acoustics of the fort, its ingenious water supply system based on indigenous genius and the air conditioning of the palaces are the stuff in which historians revel. The fort conceals in its bowels the triumph and tragedy of the Qutub Shahis to whose times the bulk of the fort complex belongs.

The Qutub Shahis ruled from 1512 to 1590 the area known to historians as the Deccan, with Golkonda as their capital, which they later shifted to Hyderabad. The fort is built on a 400-ft. high hill, its highest point occupied by a double-storeyed structure, originally called Tana Shahi ki Gaddi. It is now known as Bala Hisar, which is the inner area marked for palaces.

The small add-on structure (white coloured structure with a dark brown roof) you'll find at the bottom right is actually a temple (of Bhagya Lakshmi/ Maha lakshmi). Many Hindus worship there on a regular basis. This is a live example of Hindu-Muslim co-existence in Hyderabad.
General public were allowed to climb up the steps inside the minarets till late 80's. They don't allow now.

Charminar, the great monument, is a synonym for Hyderabad and the pivot around which the glory and history of the city have developed. To imagine this 400-year-old city without Charminar is to imagine New York without the Statue of Liberty or Moscow without the Kremlin. Built by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1591, shortly after he had shifted his capital from Golkonda to what now is known as Hyderabad, this beautiful colossus in granite, lime, mortar and, some say, pulverised marble, was at one time the heart of the city. This great tribute to aesthetics looks sturdy and solid from a distance but as one moves closer, it emerges as an elegant and romantic edifice proclaiming its architectural eminence in all its detail and dignity...

Charminar is a squarish structure with four towers in the four corners of the square, each of whose sides is 20 metres in length. Every side opens into a plaza through giant arches, which overlook four major thoroughfares and dwarf other features of the building except the minarets. Each arch is 11 metres wide and rises 20 metres to the pinnacle from the plinth. The minarets soar skywards by 24 metres from the roof of Charminar. Each minaret has four storeys, each looking like a delicately carved ring around the minaret. Some Anglophiles call Charminar the Arc de Triomphe of the East. From the ground to the apex, the minarets cover a length of 48.7 metres.

According to Mir Moazzam Husain, a long time official of the UNESCO and a keen student of this historic city, “these minarets may even symbolise the first four khalifs of Islam, but I cannot vouch for this interpretation with any degree of certainty.” At the western end of the roof of Charminar is a beautiful mosque; the oldest in Hyderabad, and the rest of the roof was used as a court in Qutub Shahi times. Atop the great monument are 45 prayer spaces for the devout where they can offer worship in an atmosphere unspoilt by the bustle of the city. East of this space is a spacious verandah with small and large arches in the middle. The first floor has beautiful balconies from where one has a fantastic view of the historic city and its later accretions.

These are technical details, of interest only to scholars and scribes. For the tourist, Charminar disgorges unlimited architectural wealth exuding from every pore of its masonry surface. The minarets taper off with a bulbous dome, embellished by petal-like motifs, and crowned by a brass spire. Though Charminar has a number of features answering to Hindu architectural usage, the minarets themselves are exclusively an Islamic architectural tradition. Unlike Taj Mahal, the fluted minarets of Charminar are built into the main structure. Inside the four-storeyed minarets are spiral stairways of 149 steps leading you to the top, the highest point one can reach, and providing a panoramic view of the sprawling and amorphous city. Each minaret has four arcaded balconies helping the tourist to imbibe the beauty of the city at various levels.

... Even as the arches and minarets of Charminar reflect the influence of Islamic architectural schools, the structure as a whole embodies elements of South Indian temple architecture... Flanking each arch are four arched and trellised windows one above the other. The four main arches have thus 32 such windows.

Legislative Assembly:

Built in 1913, the building was originally the Hyderabad State Town hall. The architecture is a synthesis of Rajasthani and Persian styles, with an all white, aesthetic look. Located adjoining the picturesque Public Gardens, a massive statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a sitting posture is erected at the entrance park to the Assembly.

HYDERABAD: Temples in the Old City have always stood as statements of communal harmony. One such place is the Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple at Jiaguda near Puranapul.

...the history of the temple dates back to the Nizam period.

The temple was constructed during the regime of Quli Qutub Shah kings by the ' showkars ' (merchants) of Karwan, commemorating the visit of a Jeeyar swamy . It was then called as the ' Ramanuja Kutam .'
It was initially called Jeeyar Gudem . Over the years it became Jeerugudem and now it is known as Jiaguda .
The temple was consecrated by Vanamamalai Jeeyar Swamy and Shrungaram Thiruvengala Chary, a priest, who used to perform Mala Kainkaryam at the Sitarambagh temple in the city.

...The temple follows the pancharatra agama shastra rituals on the lines of Srirangam temple in Chennai.
The main deity of the temple is Ranganatha Swamy and the temple has the idols of goddesses Sri Devi and Bhudevi. This is the only temple, one of its kind, which has Brahma sitting on a lotus springing from the naval of Vishnu...

The temple attracts good crowds on Vikunta Ekadasi , Sankranthi and during brahmotsavams during the Chaitramasam (April). Special puja s are conducted for five days, starting from Mukkoti Ekadasi .

A ' veda patashala ' (a school to teach vedas ) is also run by the temple trust.

The Sitaram Bagh Temple is a blend of different architectural styles

...The Sitaram Bagh Temple, built by Puranmal Ganeriwala, a banker, around the 1830s, is a fine example of a mixed style of architecture, where Rajasthani, Mughal and quite curiously, European elements blend to form a melange. It was for these features that the temple precincts has been listed. The temple had also won the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) - Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Award for the year 2001. "Each time one enters the courtyard, there is a sense of being overwhelmed by the style, scale and grace of the various structures and architectural elements..." says the award citation.

The temple complex stands amidst a sprawling 25-acre garden, all of which is surrounded by a 20 feet high wall, lending it a fort-like appearance, in itself a feature. The gateways, in three directions - East, West and South, are all huge. The imposing main gateway on the Mallepally-Mangalhat road has a gopuram sitting on two walls that have balconies with European features.

In the main sanctum sanctorum the deities of Sita and Ram and others are consecrated. The idols are in marble and were brought from Jaipur. There are other temples in the complex devoted to Varadarajaswamy, Hanuman, Laxmi and Shiva.

As you walk through the courtyards in the spacious complex, you stumble upon rich and varied architectural styles - a canopied overhanging balcony in Rajasthani style here and a stone mandapa in typical South Indian style there, three step wells, a number of inns and rooms with facades having stucco decorations, for accommodating devotees and temple priests who come from Tamil Nadu.

"The compound wall, huge wooden doorways and the meandering passage served as a sound defence system, to ward off attacks by enemies," says Dr. A. K. Ganeriwal, a practising orthopaedic surgeon and great grandson of Puranmalji.

He disputes the legend of the Nizam gifting away a jagir of two villages in the erstwhile Berar region of Maharashtra for the upkeep of the temple and says it was actually purchased by Puranmalji for 2000 gold coins. Another tale he narrated was how Puranmalji played a key role in recovering land revenue from the Berar region and brought in 130 cartloads of money and presented it to the Nizam. Yet another was on how the walled temple complex proved to be a safe haven for hundreds of local people protecting them against attacks by the Razakars in l948, just before the liberation of the Hyderabad State.

Located about 25 kms from the heart of Hyderabad city is located the picturesque Sanghi Nagar, an industrial suburb. Seen from several kilometers away is the Sanghi Temple complex with its 15 feet tall sacred Raja Gopuram. This beautiful temple complex atop the hillock Paramanand Giri beckons the faithful devotees who seek gods infinite blessings. The aura of divinity and the verdant slope around the temple complex is panoramic and breathtaking. As one approaches the road leading to the Paramanand Giri, a huge Maha Dwaram or gateway welcomes the visitors. A little further away, a long flight of steps leads to the entrance of the temple complex. Stone elephant heads form the banisters of the stairway. Standing at the foot of the hillock, one is awestruck to see the three Gopurams towering into the blue sky. And before ascending to the temple complex on top, one stops by at the shrine of Lord Anjaneya.
Lord Venkateswara, known as the bestower of piety and plenty is the presiding deity of the complex. The 9 1/2 feet tall idol of the deity is a true replica of the one at Tirumala and resides in the imposing sanctum sanctorum in the center of the complex. To the right of the Balaji temple, stands the abode of Goddess Padmavathi, the consort of Lord Venkateswara.

Residing on the left of the Balaji temple is Lord Shiva or the "destroyer" among the trinity. This all powerful Lord is seated on a lotus with a crescent moon decorating his hair and a trident in his right hand. Standing next to the Lord is "Shakti Swaroopini" Kamalambika.

Close to the shrine of Lord Venkateswara, is the temple of Lord Rama, the symbol of man's conquest over evil. Accompanying the Lord are his faithful consort Sita, devoted brother Lakshmana and fervent devotee Hanuman, who is seated at the feet of the Lord with folded hands.The temple of Lord Vijayganapathi is next to the Rama temple.

The Navagraha deities are the only ones that are in an open temple. Surya, the Sun God stands in the center and other Grahas surround him, each facing a direction over which he rules.The abode of Kartikeya is on the left of the Ganesh temple. Holding a staff in his right hand and resting his left hand on his waist, the loin clothed Kartikeya is like a Kalpavriksha fulfilling the desires of his devotees.Further away is the temple of Goddess Durga. The dark moon faced deity clad in a saffron robe has three eyes. Decorated with ornaments and hibiscus flower garlands, the Goddess holds a lotus in her right hand and the left hand reposes downward.The Ashtalakshmi temple is between the Balaji and Padmavathi temples. Bedecked with jewellery and garlands, Goddess Aadilakshmi in eight facets is seated holding a lotus and Abhaya mudra in her two hands and a lotus and Vara mudra (offering boons) in her other two hands...

Nawab Zaffar Jung Bahadur, a Minister, who had a fascination for stars, showed "scientific temper", long before the term became part of science jargon. He imported two telescopes - the 15-inch Grubb refractor and an 8 - inch Cooke astrograph from England in 1901- that were mounted at a strategic location, in his estate at Phisalbanda on the outskirts of the Old City.

These were in 1908, shifted to a spot at Begumpet, that came to be known as the Nizamiah Observatory (named after the Sixth Nizam, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan).

Two Nobel laureates, Sir C. V. Raman and Prof. S. Chandrasekhar, who visited the observatory at different times, counted it among the best. It was because of its importance, that the observatory, a cylindrical granite structure topped by a dome that rises into the sky and an old granite building nearby, have been listed as Grade I monumental structures meant for conservation.

"The second oldest observatory in the country, it has played an important role. It became famous for its involvement in the international project, Carte Du Ciel or astrographic sky survey of mapping and preparing an extensive Astrographic Star Catalogue in a given celestial zone. The task of mapping in a zone covering declination 17 to 23 degrees south was originally assigned to Santiago Observatory in Chile but later shifted to Nizamiah. The project culminated in the publication of 12 volumes of catalogues giving accurate positions of nearly 8,00,000 stars".

The observatory, which also participated in recording solar activity in the International Geophysical Year in 1957-58 and the International Quiet Sun Year in 1964-65, became a precursor to the Japal - Rangapur Observatory where a 48-inch reflecting telescope was installed. The OU Astronomy Department itself came to be upgraded as the Centre of Advanced Study in Astronomy. Its observations of variable stars used to be communicated to the British Astronomical Association and the Harvard College Observatory.
