Yeah Shiv Sena will claim that they were able to force MIAL to build a giant monument for Shivaji. MIAL will be able to continue upgrading by removing the small existing statue of Shivaji Visitors and Mumbaikars will have a new monument and a nice gateway to the airport |

why cant they simply replace the big statue with a much smaller one?
The SS need to back off. the airport is already named after Shivaji maharaj. what more do you want. Also odd to see Congress workers in the demonstrations. |

Yo Thackeray! Jeejabai called. She doesn't want any more statues of Shivaji, Shahuji or Shambaji...She's tired of monkeys like you exploiting her family for petty political gains and some money. Also, she wants to revert the city's name to BOMBAY

How can a dying elephant be growing at more than 8%? I know this is an airport thread but I am sick of people coming out with these doom scenarios so let me answer this once and for all. The fact of the matter is that these skyscrapers are built cause there is demand. Where there is demand there are people who are making money. Demand=Good strong economy. Demand for skyscraper= people who constructing skyscrapers getting employed= More employed people= better economic growth. And its not just the skyscrapers, From mulund to navi mumbai to Thane everywhere there are buildings being built.Seriously do some freaking research before coming out with unreal scenarios. which dumbo would built in a city which is dying? Cause a dying city would not have any demand. the growth rate of kolkata in the 1970s was about 2% per annum. Now that is relative decline. Not 8% growth which mumbai is witnessing.Companies are not stupid enough to open offices in the city if its dying. and for the record, none of the major Indian cities are dying. Growth for all is above 6%. Which is healthy. |

I have noticed a bunch of people here who make rash judgements about various cities without thinking things through. There is a lot going for Mumbai right now... - The metro bandwagon started late. But its truly on. It might not be moving with the speed in Delhi but the reasoning behind that is complex and we can't really get into that...However Line 1 is on and Line 2 is nearing financial closure...Very Quietly, Navi Mumbai is in the process of inviting tenders for the first line there... - Monorail on track (another N-S) link if you ask me. A few months delayed maybe but definitely on...If a monorail link can be completed in 2 years it is a minor achievement atleast if you ask me - Plenty of flyovers in various stages of progress including various roads in different stages of completion (SCLR, Eastern freeway etc). Newspapers need to sell and in many cases small issues are highlighted giving the impression that things are not moving... - Navi Mumbai airport will come through and T2 will get built. These are non-issues. Petty politics holds up projects in all cities...Too many agencies have a stake in it... - People who complain should take a visit to Navi Mumbai as well and see how its growing with a very good level of urban planning.. - Moreover other growth centers like BKC and now Wadala are being created that will shift the traditional N-S movement of commuters to some extent... And BTW where did you read that airport slums will not be evicted....I posted a news article earlier saying HDIL has almost tied up with most of the encroached land to build low cost housing elsewhere... I am not saying there are no issues, but people who loosely use terms like "dying city" etc are misinformed for the most part. |

^I blame TV.
but seriously more than anything the biggest plus for the city has been 24 hour electricity for even the most remote areas of thane and navi mumbai. In the past few years the power cuts have been virtually non existent even on the outer fringes of MMR. Yeah people have to pay more for electricity no doubt, but they get the 24 hour services. Even the water connections barring the current fiscal have increase from the year 2000. I remember 3 hours of water per day to now 8 hours being the norm. Infra does not mean just good roads and transport. It means basic amenities and a whole host of other things. Personally i have never come across a dying city where there is so much private sector led building activity. If thats dying then people need to start reading what dying means. |

anyways lets not stick to the discussion and try to avoid dying analogies. but thats something i had to get off my chest. considering the airport is short on capacity. surely as a stop gap they should ban any plane less than 150 passengers in capacity. With the new aeroplanes like the A380 which can carry more people the net capacity of the airport will automatically increase if that happens. the current airport can handle 700 flights a day. If all those are big planes then the capacity of the airport jumps to about 51-60 million. Which means only the terminal capacity has to be increased which can be done so by adding floors to the terminal. (like to point out i am not an aviation expert. Pretty sure there are many holes in this) |
