Peacock, or no peacock?

I ABHOR the peacock design. I think it looks super cheezy and Chinese-like (no offense), or more like an over-styled pre-GM Daewoo. I wish they'd do something about it, and I hope I've been misinformed about Hafeez's participation. I hope the international firm chooses something that is an extraction of the form of the Indian national bird, but not literally (not saying that the current design is literal). The concourses that make their way outward on either side of the main terminal building look TERRIBLE. There's no semblance of a design-link, as far as I'm concerned. I guess I'm trying to say - less cheezy crap, and more quality, please.

Mumbai airport opts for fresh blueprint

Posted online: Saturday , September 15, 2007

http://www.expressindia.com/latest-n...eprint/217074/

Quote:
Sixteen months after it took over India’s busiest airport, Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL)—the GVK-led joint venture consortium undertaking the overhaul of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA)—will on Saturday submit re-worked plans to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Curiously, most aspects of the master plan MIAL had submitted to the ministry nearly a year ago have significantly changed—including the design and look of the integra-ted terminal building at Sah-ar and the location of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower.

While MIAL is tightlipped about the finer details, Newsline has learnt that the design drawn up by MIAL’s master planners—Netherlands Airports Consultants BV (NACO)—has now been trashed and swapped for a fresh blueprint executed by the New York office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), one of the largest architectural firms in the US.

Now, the peacock-inspired design handpicked by MIAL Managing Director G V Sanjay Reddy himself of the terminal building has been drastically changed since it was a “compromise on efficiency and aesthetics”.

“The main reason for changing the design was that the number of gates (boarding bridges) was not adequate in the earlier design—we only had 106 aircraft parking bays in all, with 67 nose-in bays. This would greatly limit and slow down our passenger processing capacity,” revealed a top MIAL official requesting anonymity.

Now there will be about 190 bays in all, with most having aerobridges. This will enhance passenger handling since fewer passengers will have to be transported by buses. “The remote bays will essentially be for the low-cost carriers who can’t afford aerobridges,” the official added.

Asked about cost escalations, the official said, “The original design would have been much cheaper for us since it was only spread over 2.5 lakh sq m. The new design now will sprawl across 4.5 lakh sq m—that is nearly double of what was proposed earlier.”

Though the number of counters will be increased from the 316 proposed in the earlier design, the final number will be worked out after the currently underway passenger simulation study is concluded.

As per the new plan, the ATC tower will be relocated near the current domestic terminal at Santacruz—in the parking lot opposite Terminal 1-B to be precise. Earlier, the control tower was to be shifted to the south side of the airport, near the Air India hangars on the Kalina side.

However, stiff opposition from the Airports Authority of India (which provides air traffic management services)—chronic flooding in the area and accessibility were cited as primary concerns— led to the location switch. Also, at a height of 79 metres—as against the current 50-metre tall tower—the ATC tower will now be the airport signature.

MIAL declined comment when contacted.

I'd be most happy if the above were to be implemented in full-effect.

Yeah the delays are annoying for a airport that is under such pressure from traffic & passengers.

TERMINAL PLANS

First Phase Of Work On Mumbai’s Integrated Airport Terminal Will Be Complete By 2010; Rest Will Take Two More Years

Sunando Sarkar & Manju V | TNN

Mumbai: Senior Mumbai International Airport Limited officials on Thursday laid out for TOI the yearby-year plans that would help them complete the city’s first integrated airport terminal by 2012.
2008 will see planners and engineers starting on the demolition of a part of the international terminal at Sahar and integrating the other parts of the same terminal.
The international airport at Sahar is now divided into terminals 2A, 2B and 2C. MIAL will start demolishing terminal 2A and move operations to terminals 2B and 2C. Terminals 2B and 2C, incidentally, will also have to be demolished later to make way for Mumbai’s new 55 lakhsquare-foot terminal building.
2008 will also see construction of a taxi-track parallel to runway 14-32; this will substantially reduce the time you now have to spend on the runway in Mumbai. “It will benefit fliers by reducing the time aircraft have to spend on the runway before take-off or after landing,’’ MIAL managing director G V Sanjay Reddy said.
Something else will happen in 2008 that will make checking in less of a chore; it is the in-line baggagescreening system. This system will mean you do not need to have your baggage X-rayed before you check in. The screening, instead, will happen after you have checked in and handed over your luggage.
The facade of the existing terminals will also be done up in 2008.
MIAL hopes to finish constructing a new terminal (1C) at Santacruz in 2009. This will connect the current domestic terminals, 1A and 1B, and help MIAL provide aerobridges for a section of fliers taking off from 1B. There are also plans to have a conference hall in 1C that can accommodate about 100 people. “Fliers often come here to attend meetings in South Mumbai and the drive from the airport to the meeting venue can take hours. This facility will help visitors save on that commute,’’ Reddy explained.
But, just like many of the facilities at Sahar, this terminal may also be pulled down later though no final decision has been taken.
Mumbaikars, however, will have to wait till 2010 for getting real a taste of the future; that will be the year when the first phase of the new integrated terminal at Sahar will be ready.
“This phase will take up around 15 per cent of the total area of the new terminal and, initially, handle only international flights,’’ Reddy said on Thursday.
A new air-traffic control tower will also come up in 2010 and the old tower will be demolished. This will bring many more airlines to runway 14-32; they now refuse to use it because the existing tower is considered to be too close to the runway.
The second phase of Mumbai’s new integrated terminal is likely to be complete by 2011 and the last phase will be done by 2012.
And, when that happens, you will never need to go to the existing terminals at Santacruz; the new 55 lakhsquare-foot terminal will be your destination, irrespective of whether you are flying to Delhi or Damascus from Mumbai.
The giant X-shaped integrated terminal building will itself be an engineering marvel of the kind that Mumbai probably has not seen before. Some of the roof structures covering the terminal building will each be about 8 lakh square feet in area. More than 10,000 workers and 700 engineers will be working on the plan to make it happen.

THE FACILITIES

The new terminal will make a world of difference to how you fly

CHECK-IN COUNTERS: 339

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW: 182

CAR-PARKING CAPACITY: 12,000

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW: 3,000

AEROBRIDGES: 66

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW: 18

(* 3 aerobridges will be dedicated to serving A-380s)

AIRCRAFT TO BE PARKED: 106

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW: 84

DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TERMINALS: INTEGRATED

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW: SEPARATE TERMINALS

ENTERTAINMENT: BOLLYWOOD GARDEN THEME

WHAT YOU HAVE NOW: NOTHING

WHAT’S NEW NOW

Several changes have happened at the airport since 2006

DUTY-FREE SHOPPING

The international terminal of Mumbai airport got a new duty-free shopping zone, spread across 24,541 square feet, in January 2008.

TERMINAL 1B

The arrival section at terminal 1B was inaugurated and 65 per cent of domestic flight arrivals moved here from terminal 1A in September 2007.

ADDITIONAL CHECK-IN COUNTERS

Terminal 1B now has 80 check-in counters; this is almost twice of what was there earlier.

NEW TAXIWAYS

Two new rapid-exit taxiways, India and W, have been inaugurated along with a
new parallel taxiway (called A4). These new additions have reduced runwayoccupancy time.

SLUM REHAB

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) handed over the work of rehabilitation of the slums around the airport to another agency in October 2007.

RETAIL

Passengers now have a variety of food options with a number of kiosks at both domestic and international terminals.

WI-FI CONNECTIVITY

The entire airport is wi-fi-enabled. A paid service for a bandiwdth of 512 kbps and above will be introduced shortly.

NEW TROLLEYS

5000 new trolleys have been added at the international terminal.

THE FUTURE IS HERE: Picture above is an artist’s impression of what the new integrated airport terminal may look like once work is completed in 2012. Pictures below and left are what the interiors of terminals 1A, 2B and 2C will be like; but none of these new-look terminals will stay once the integrated terminal comes up at Sahar

MIAL to raze much of what it is building now

Manju V & Chinmayi Shalya | TNN

Mumbai: A significant part of the construction that is now happening at the Mumbai airport will be razed to the ground, by the same hands that are now building everything, once the new integrated airport terminal comes up.
MIAL officials estimate that the cost of building everything that may ultimately have to be taken apart will be around Rs 700 crore.
This problem, say MIAL officials, would not have been there if the new terminal was being built on vacant land. “But we will have to give world-class facilities to fliers even as we demolish parts of the existing terminal buildings and simultaneously construct the permanent, integrated terminal,’’ MIAL managing director G V Sanjay Reddy said.
Thee examples of structures that will be renovated and ultimately pulled down are many. Take, for instance, international terminals 2B and 2C. They are being renovated only to be demolished part by part after 2010 to make way for the integrated terminal. Another example is the ramp to be built to divert vehicular traffic outside international terminals onto a different road so that the area used by the existing road can be covered up to start work on the integrated terminal. “Passengers expect a level of service and it has to be provided. We cannot tell them to wait for four ears,’’ Reddy said. “The name of the game is flexibility. We won’t know till 2012 whether we can keep a particular facility or have to demolish it,’’ he said, referring to the long list of structures, hangars and offices that might be demolished.
“We now think that all operations — domestic and international — should be shifted to the integrated terminal coming up at Sahar. But only time will tell whether we can do away with terminal 1B or will still need it,’’ he said.

THE AIRPORT NOW

Mumbai airport handled 25.2 million passengers in 2007. The figure makes it the busiest in the country and among the 40 busiest airports in the country.
The airport handles 750 flights every day.
But the airport is one of the smaller ones, in terms of size, even in India; it has an area of only 2,000 acres. Delhi, on the other hand, has an airport that is spread over 5,000 acres; even Bangalore, with 5 million passengers annually, is spread over 5,000 acres. And Kualalumpur, which handles 30 million passengers every year, has over 12,000 acres.

You have to give them the credit for operating in such difficult circumstances and the are not sure what will be kept for future use and only 2000 acres is a shock to me.

I would like to see more interior photos thou and the new duty free shops.
