It is really confusing about CSIAL.
What are these Terminals , "1A", "1B", "1C", "2A", "2B", "2C" ?.
Which is International, which is domestic ?. Which is arriving and which is departure terminals ?. I may be get an idea if I read the whole blog, but if somebody can explain , it would be really nice.

terminal 1 is domestic (santa cruz). 1a for indian airlines and kingfisher, 1b for the rest. 1c is under construction

terminal 2 is for international (sahar) with flights spread around the terminals a,b & c. at any given time not more than 2 of these have been operational. one of them (a i think) is now being demolished for the new terminal to come up. b & c will be demolished in phases so as to ensure no major disruption to flights

I had to take a connecting flight from Bombay to Hyderabad once, it was my first time in there and i landed in the international airport and had to get to the domestic airport, but it was 2 AM so no taxis and had to wait till 6 or something before i could get there.... it was a nightmare, did not return to Bombay for many years after that!!

is it any easier now??

I'm sorry to hear that, skdubai. I'm not sure how you didn't find any cabs, 'coz they are, and always have been available 24/7 at both terminals. There used to be a free inter-terminal coach service that operated street-side (for years), and now, this coach service operates air-side.
I've never had to connect to a domestic flight, but I have friends who've had to, and have never had any REAL issues (except for minor flight delays). Overall, CSIA is a more pleasant experience.

Just getting hypothetical- Is it possible to connect the domestic terminal complex of 1 A,B,C with the International Terminal building of 2A,B,C through an underground tunnel with travelators etc. I saw the ariel view of Mumbai airport complex a few pages back and thought that the distance between the two as the crow flies is so much shorter than the current road distance.
Surely the authorities must have thought of this long ago and discarded the idea for some reason?

In Mumbai International Airport, taxis run 24X7. Now whether they rip you off at ungodly hours is a different matter.

Prepaid taxi service has always been in service since 1989. It could be that you may have missed the counter completely. But things have improved nonetheless - dramatically for Mumbai airport.

Cheers

Phew!!. I thought I was someone with atleast an average IQ, but attempts to decipher whats going on at Mumbai airport leave me doubtful !!!

Could somebody please explain what is to be achieved ultimately? If the aim is a 'brand new' integrated domestic and international terminal ( called T2 in the master plan), then what happens to all the existing ones ( 1 A, 1B, 1C which is being constructed, and 2 A, 2 B, 2C ) ? Do they all go? Is the T2 going to come up Phoenix like at the location of curernt international terminal, slowly cannibalising it?. Will T 2 be the only terminal, or will there be others too ? ( if yes, then what's the point in having an integrated T 2 ?). Also, all this is to be completed by 2010. Is that happening ?

Thanks for your efforts.

I hope the skywalks connecting to the airport won't be like those in and around Mumbai

Nah, but the folks at CSIA did a good job...so far.

Guys I have taken some pictures of the Skywalks in Detroit's Somerset Mall. I will post them very soon in the Mumbai Freeways/Flyovers thread. This will be just to compare the Skywalks here and there and if Babus are watching such forums, it will give them a better idea on how to make a more civilized skywalk instead of the traditional chaalu-quality one in India.....

Bombay Boy - regardless of how many aerobridges you have in an airport, you will always have airlines NOT using them as it has costs associated with usage of a/es. An explanation was given to STORM in Delhi Airport section a few days back, giving various reasons for use or non-use of a/es by airlines. You are free to email me for a more elaborate explanation.

Cheers
