Interesting question Beirut! No, this is not a dumb question at all.

Maybe they forced water to pass for certain geologic factors. Does this make sense???

They are still recycling the land itself so it is being moved around a lot. It will take another 10 years for the reclamation to be complete. Construction on it will be at the very end of the 2nd phase of the Beirut Central District reconstruction project.

the first picture is of the old normandy garbage dump, the installations next to it were the factory that was recycling it. The chemical make-up of the dump was very unstable, you could not just build on it, you needed to extract the gazes that accumulate underneath it (and could explode), then recycle the garbage, and THEN start filling the space, which then takes years to be stable enough to build upon.

Thanks Lebanese Cedar and Khayam for that information, it is unfortunate that it will take so long to be complete... how come the landfill in Dabayyeh was completed so quickly?

I guess that's because nothing existed prior to filling the land. The land was all sea. The problem for the Beirut one was that, as Khayam mentioned above, there were trapped gases and stuff like that.

As Khayam said, the landfill is toxic in gases, particularly Methane which can explode (and actually have in the past on numerous occasions). They first need to extract the gases from the ground before it can be further developed and this takes time.

This might be interesting to some of you... I found these pics (taken in 1995) of the inside of the theatre:

This is not in the space ship, this was the old opera house where the Virgin Megastore stands today.

This has been mentioned in the Marina City thread, why dont you ask it there (seeing as it is not in the BCD it would help keep the threads on topic).

So are we not sure now what this is? I still think it looks like the space ship because of its shape and size...but it could be either.
