Dundas & Yonge was never a red light district (Toronto doesn't even have one...Jarvis St might have been a close contender).

It was just seedy. Non-discript buildings with non-discript businesses. Still never a no-go zone, as it was still Yonge...and still home to the Eaton Centre.

Dundas Square is much better than what was there...the square itself is very busy and most importantly, interactive and a good place to hang out for anyone and everyone. The billboard thing gives it some distinction, albeit overly crass and commercial.

But it still hasn't killed the long-lived Yonge Strip feel, which still keeps much of its seedy, anything goes appeal...the soul of downtown. This is in direct opposition of what it's often compared to....Times Square, which was totally sterilized.

It's great to have a focal point like Yonge-Dundas Square. It is a place that gives you an opportunity to relax, sit down and enjoy the urban ambiance of Toronto.
No offence dude, but that's the last place I'd go to relax!

I find that Trinty Square and parts of Ryerson are good places for relaxing around Yonge and Dundas.

This is specifically what I'm against about it.

Kinda. There'll be Future Shop, an AMC cinema, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, along with smaller shops, restaurants, and food courts.

Why is that a bad thing? It is attention-drawing, will make the square come alive, and will add colour, lighting and a new ambience to the intersection.

I fully support it.

I walk past the intersection every night & silently cuss to myself when I look upand see the great blackened sign that had a piece fall out of it. Will it ever be replaced?!! Will it be this great empty hole all tourist season? Anyone know why they are dragging their ass about rebuilding it? Looks appalling now
that it is partially disassembled.

I imagine that particular thing is tied up with liability issues...lawsuits flying left and right over it. Might be a while before it's actually replaced with whatever it is that's going to be replacing it.

You'd think we'd see something in The Star about what's going on with that... it'd make a GREAT article for "The Fixer" in the GTA section
