Just to add, today they were adding new cellphone aerials on the building roof, since the existing ones are on the relay tower.

I got lots of pictures yesterday. There was some fella working on the tower.
Noticed a stopping up order to allow a crane in - to take it down i presume.

Apparently it was too windy to remove the tower this weekend; the scaffholding platforms are still visible protruding from the roof above Quay St.

Mast debate
Take a look at this picture, a long-term landmark is shortly to disappear. The tall mast on the top of the Granada building is going to be pulled down asap. A property bod involved in one of the nearby developments says that it’s a pretty open secret that this is the preliminary move in demolishing the whole Granada building. After recent redundancies on top of previous redundancies this will mark the symbolic passing of Sidney Bernstein’s mighty northern TV empire, which will then be reduced to a few offices possibly at Media City in Salford. And a big office in London.

G-force reduction
When Confidential asked Granada about demolition plans they were directed to the parent company in London. The press officer who initially fielded the question had a little trouble with the name, stuttering along the lines of, “Garanade, Granola, Granpianer..er..sorry could you repeat the word?” Oops.

Most of the mast is now down. I guess the remainder will be removed tomorrow as the roads around are still closed.

Granada's tower goes

Don Frame
5/11/2007

IT'S been a familiar landmark on the Manchester skyline for decades, but Granada's famous aerial has finally been taken down.

A huge crane removed the beacon from the roof of Granada's Quay Street headquarters in the city centre.

A spokesman said: "The aerial hasn't been operation for about 10 years, and needed to be taken down. We planned the operation at the weekend when there was less traffic about."

Granada is considering leaving the building but is still deciding whether to move nearby or to relocate entirely to the new MediaCity at Salford Quays.

I repeat, put it in the square at Media City, with a statue of Tony Wilson looking down from the top of it!

So are Granada going to retain its 1000 staff in Manchester or shift most of them to London?

Poor thing does look rather castrated without the mast.

maybe so, but it is still just about the best bit of curtain walling in the city; the punctuation of the wall surface by tilting window openings is a particular delight.

I will never understand the rush to demolish buildings and scar the cityscape before there is even a proposal for a replacement, regardless of what they look like. Some people must really love surface car parking.

In any case its orientation means that it wouldn’t hamper re-development of the Granada site at large, and would be encased and obstructed by the new structures around it. Personally I would keep it and refurbish it even if I didn’t like it at all, purely in terms sustainability and fiscal frugality.

it reminds me of manchester post office, now refurbed and renamed the zenith building. i wouldn't mind seeing something like this happen, especially if they added extra floors . i love the zenith building. everyone should go to the top of arndale carpark to admire it. i've never seen anything like it, what they've done at the top. the phrase 'light and airy' doesn't do it justice and neither does this photo of mine. i understand the window frames are wooden... something like danish maple or something posh... and they all open which is a bonus these days.

i love caw's pic, you'd think a bomb went off . now i want to see this happen to granada!

Funny thing that but there are alot of reason why that happens but it happens if the building is empty and no one wants it. First one I'd come up with is security. With a flat piece of land you don't have to worry about any thing. You don't have to worry about anyone breaking in, don't have to worry about people living in it and don't have to worry about people setting fire to it. Might get gipos but there quite easy to move on. Some companies use it for car parking because its a nice little earner on the side. You can make £1,000s a day. £5-10 a car 200-400 cars per day. Easy £5-10k a week. I think a major factor is if they have plans as soon as they are approved the site is cleared the proper building guys can move on site.
