A nice view of Technopark from on the IT Corridor. This shows a part of the section of Technopark which is perched up on the hill. We can see the massive Bhavani in the middle, with its siblings Pampa and Periyar in front of it.

In the foreground, one can see the top of Gayathri. Gayathri is currently being expanded to accomodate the immediate demand from its current tenants which include Ernst & Young, Alamy Images, Tata Elxsi and many others.

Behind the bulk of Bhavani, the current TCS Corporate Training Centre is hidden. In less than 12 months, Technopark's new reigning champion, the giant Thejaswini would also be visible in this frame, popping up from behind Bhavani.

An advertisement of Technopark along the IT Corridor. It says it all!! Technopark is India's only IT Park rated at CMMI Level 4 and ISO 9001. All this from a 100% state-run venture, makes us feel proud!

Nanotechnology Centre in Trivandrum

Molecular study centre to be set up in city soon

The Hindu: Staff Reporter

Centre expected to provide a fillip to research in nanotechnology

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala will soon have a national research institute, Centre for Molecular Materials, the first of its kind in the country. This centre, to be set up in Thiruvananthapuram, is expected to provide a fillip to research works in nanotechnology as well as electronics, according to C.N.R. Rao, Chairman of the Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.

In his address at the second convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K), at the Technopark here on Friday evening, he said the centre could be set up in the next three months.

It was for the State Government to provide land for setting up the centre and the funds would be made available by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. The decision to set up the centre was in response to a request made by the State Government and it was estimated to cost around Rs. 25 crores, he added. Dr. Rao said it was also proposed to launch a National Science Foundation, at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,000 crores, to promote science in the country.

The IIITM-K could also be developed further into a major organisation, with emphasis on knowledge management. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy chaired the function. Minister for Education E.T. Mohammed Basheer said a study group would be formed at the IIITM-K to make time bound recommendations on expanding the scope of the concurrent instructional services programme into a State-wide mission for quality higher education.

Prof. Rao also launched the Computational Chemistry Portal of the IIITM-K. As many as 58 students of the first and second batches of the post-graduate diploma course in IT received their diplomas from Prof. Rao.

There has already been a proposal to set up a Nanotechnology Centre by two senior scientists based in the US. As usual, that had been forced into controversy, with GoK taking a negative stance. Since this proposal is from the Ministry of Science & Technology itself, guess there shudn't be any more hurdles.

Nanotechnology, as we know, is the technology of tomorrow. It deals with engineering on an atomic scale, and is capable of incredible things, in every field we can think of - computing, engineering, materials, medicine......!!! All the world's leading technology companies - IBM, HP, Intel and so on - are now focusing on nanaotechnology as their future line of business. Tech experts say it could be $ 1 trillion industry in the next few years!!!

In India, the leading institution doing nanotech research is the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. This new centre in Trivandrum will be the first one dedicated to Nanotechnology. It will be supported by the presence of premier institutions like Technopark, C-DAC, C-DIT, IITM-K and the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Biotechnology in the city! Hope the Nanotech Centre comes up near or in Technopark. This is one more jewel in Trivandrum's cap of elite research institutions. It has indeed become one of the technology hubs of the country.

@ Sudheesh - great pix! Nice to see the construction on at full pace on Thejaswini.

Thejaswini, the largest office building in Kerala is due to be finished in Sept 2006, so work has to happen at a hectic pace. We will be posting regular updates on the work as well as on the status of the nearby plot that Sudheesh has snapped.

IIITM-K

Here are some images of the Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management - Kerala, one of the premier IT research and education institutions in the country. It is situated inside Technopark but plans to shift to a 15 acre campus on land being acquired for expansion of the Park.

A view from the roof of Bhavani, shows us the top of Periyar. In the background, we can see the green carpet stretching away till the sea, which is hidden by the shimmering glare of the evening Sun.

The line of warehouses in the distance are those of the FCI facility at Kazhakoottam. The Kazhakoottam Railway Station is next to it, literally across the road from Technopark. Once suburban train services along the line in the coming months, it will make it easier for the thousands of techies to commute to Technopark from across the metropolitan area and the TCR (Trivandrum Capital Region)

Ajay, Do you by any chance know what kind of operations Ernst&Young has at techno park? (ie Consulting, outsourcing or Auditing/Accounting). Just curious since I have an interview lined up with them soon.

Gayathri MTF

This is a close-up view of Gayathri MTF. Its 130,000 sft of space is fully occupied by clients including Ernst & Young, Tata Elxsi, Alamy Images Plc, RMESI and so on. In view of the urgent demand for space from clients, current and new, Technopark is constructing two more floors on Gayathri, adding another 60,000 sft of much-needed space.!

Behind Gayathri, the top of the Technopark Club is visible. It provides high-class dining facilities, a sports complex, swimming pool and lounge facility for the techies. With the addition of the IndiOne hotel, the thousands of techies will have more facilities to have a good time. Stay tuned for more detailed shots!
