No I'm trying to agree myself... I do admit that something needed to be done, but turning it into an overside first aid kit wasn't the answer... and I do think it looks much worse.. because at least before you could say 'post war building, it figures'... now its just 'new cladding, bleugh!'

Television House still looks pretty up to date even today. Probably one of Manchester's best from the period. Im no fan of this recald either. Its strange that this building is being subjected to this given its pivotal location at Manchester's administrative heart. Why are the planners so unenlightened? I think this is probably a call for the 'heritage nazi league' to calm down a bit. Rather than eulogising over every last remaining bit of tat from that period (and even some of more average examples) it should put its efforts into educating, promoting and preserving only the very best. That way, in these unenlightened times we avoid every 50s / 60s / 70s building, be it good bad or indifferent, being tarred with the same brush.

Ever thought they are just bringing it up to standard? I'd be surprised if you can even get real sandstone cladding now. The windows look better now, but maybe they could have used a slightly less wank coloured panel.

We had a good go at get this 'saved' in lots of ways. We put in a listing application but it was too late. This scheme also came before the Commitee i sit on and was universally slated - not just me.
The civic society also were concerned about it and prompted this article:

http://www.manchestercivic.org.uk/forum/34/F34_05.pdf

which i of course couldnt help adding my tenpennyworth to.
This building is next to some of most important buildings in Manchester and as it was didnt really shout too much and as you have said was very good for its period. Whether people like me liked this building it or not - if this was a new build it wouldnt get through. Recladding is rarely the best option -its usually the cheapest and therefore usually ends up looking that way.

So we should have knocked it down?

I think that some sites are best refurbished rather than redeveloped due to the sensitive nature of their location. This building is of the right scale for it's location and a reclad and refurb is often the right call to extend the life of a good building. The colours could be less gaudy but it's a resonable effort in my opinion.

See my previous tedious whinging about refurb and refurb.
Without running the risk of repeating myself TV House needed a bit of light fairy dust not major reconstructive surgery.
A reclad doesnt extend the life of a building it is done purely for marketing reasons by lazy building owners.
Just look across the road to Peter House for a lesson in how to sensitively refurb a post war building and still make it marketable.

But if it needed new windows and panelling for airtightness, waterproofing and insulation reasons etc, then it does everything to extend the life of the building. The concrete frame is probably in good condition. Trying to replace the facade on an aesthetically like for like basis is probably untenable.

I was involved in the complete waste of money that was spent on fairy dusting the Medical and Nursing building at Salford Uni. That will need re-doing in a few years because they did half a job.

Oh you're being too silly, Longford. Morally opposed to recladding? Come come now. And get some colour into your tired old washed out life. Here, take my hand, step into the 21st Century. Now, when this is all done and looking like the dogs bollocks, I want you eating humble pie, you hear?

You can take your humble pie and stick it up your 21st century young man!

Perhaps 'morally opposed' was a bit strong.
Perhaps 'fucking hate it' is more appropiate?

I think shortsight was talking metaphorically rolyblind!
Its a kind of mix of grey and bluey/steely white panels (wow whee!).
