Etihad Airways to launch services to Kuwait

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, is continuing its rapid flight network expansion, and has announced that it will commence services to Kuwait from 1 July 2006.

A popular route for both intra-regional and global business travellers, Etihad will operate six-flights-a-week between Abu Dhabi and Kuwait City with a combination of the airline's state-of-the-art Airbus 330-200 and Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft.

'Etihad is proud to be flying to more than 30 world-wide destinations, and the addition of Kuwait City is important because it supports our ambitions of bringing the people of the Middle East together whilst enhancing trade and tourist links,' said HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Airways.

The UAE and Kuwait have a great deal in common, especially in their roles as two of the world's largest oil producers. Moreover, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait City are amongst two of the most affluent cities in the GCC with per capita incomes of $29,100 and $21,300 respectively.

The impact of the energy industry has been considerable for both countries and enabled major investment in the hospitality sector, with impressive hotel developments under construction and occupancy nearly doubling since 2000.

'Both Abu Dhabi and Kuwait share a strong commercial bond, one that runs far deeper than oil. The introduction of a six-times-a-week service will enhance the already strong trade links within the GCC and across the globe,' added HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan.

Guests using the new service will experience Etihad's unique levels of hospitality and comfort aboard the 262-seat Airbus A330-200 (22 in Pearl and 240 in Coral) and 378-seat Boeing 777-300ER aircraft (28 in Pearl and 350 in Coral).

The new route will also increase the capabilities of Etihad Crystal Cargo which will be able to carry between 14 and 20 tonnes of cargo on each flight depending on the aircraft.
As well as carrying business and leisure travellers to Kuwait from around the Gulf, Etihad's long haul Guests will also be able to travel there smoothly and frequently using Abu Dhabi as the hub.

The combination of Etihad's Airbus and Boeing aircraft will also enable the Abu Dhabi-based airline to offer a flexible and efficient operation, whilst providing Guests with the same premium standards of service regardless of which aircraft they board.

'We are pleased to be operating two of the airline industry's most advanced aircraft on this route. Our Guests and cargo customers will be delighted with the facilities that we can now offer between Kuwait and Abu Dhabi on a weekly basis,' concluded HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan.

Flight EY717 operates every Monday, Thursday and Saturday from Abu Dhabi, departing at 19:05 and arriving in Kuwait at 19:45 local time. Return flights leave Kuwait City at 20.45, arriving in the UAE capital at 23:25.

On Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays flights leave Abu Dhabi at 14:25, arriving in Kuwait at 15:05 local time. Return services then depart at 16.05, arriving in Abu Dhabi at 18:45.

Kuwaiti national carrier reports 82 million dollar loss

KUWAIT CITY (AFP) - National carrier Kuwait Airways Corp. (KAC) posted 82.2 million dollars in losses in the fiscal year 2005/2006 that ended on March 31, mainly due to high fuel prices, its chairman has said.

Revenues for the state-owned airways reached 868 million dollars, up from the previous year's 760 million dollars, Sheikh Talal Mubarak al-Sabah told the official KUNA news agency.

Expenditures rose to 950.2 million dollars in 2005/2006 from 897 million dollars the previous year, due to high fuel prices and increased maintenance costs, he said Friday.
Sheikh Talal said the airline paid about 81 million dollars extra for fuel in the past fiscal year, almost equal to its losses.

KAC has spent 15 of the past 16 years in the red and accommulated losses to the tone of 1.8 billion dollars in the 11 fiscal years to 2003/2004.

Losses are covered by the state.

Last year, the government paid 790 million dollars to the carrier which represented KAC's losses for seven fiscal years. The amount had been held back by MPs over allegations of mismanagement.
The amount represented about 66 percent of the carrier's capital of 1.2 billion dollars.
The only year that the airline was in the black over the last 16 years was in 1999/2000 when it made a profit of 80 million dollars after receiving compensation from Iraq.

KAC has suffered cash flow problems and a debt burden which peaked at 1.4 billion dollars after Iraq's seven-month occupation of Kuwait which began in August 1990.

It borrowed 1.3 billion dollars after the emirate's liberation in the 1991 Gulf War, but has repaid most of it.

Besides increase in fuel cost, Sheikh Talal cited "tough competition" as a cause for losses after the government allowed private airlines to operate.

The first airline Al-Jazeera, a low-cost passenger carrier, started operations in October while two more airliners, one for cargo and the other a full passenger airliner, are still under establishment.

Kuwait Airways operates a fleet of 15 Airbus and two Boeing 777 aircraft, while total net assets at two billion dollars last year. The carrier employs a staff of some 7,000 people.

5a95a9at Kuwait Airways will not become faster. I predict it will take at least seven more years. Man, with 5a95a9a many tens (possibly hundreds) will be transfered to another ministry and this won't happen easily (with the wa96aa and what not). Anyway, when the Kuwait National Airways comes to existence and is not merely ink on paper, Kuwait Airways will be forced to raise its standards, provide better quality in cheaper prices, and generally become a better company.

New plans to update Kuwait Airways fleet

New plans to update Kuwait Airways fleet

KUWAIT, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- The Ministry of Planning has agreed to support a study of the Kuwait Airways routes and operating plans for seven years starting in 2008/2009 to plan a project to modernize Kuwait Airways' fleet, according to the Airways.

Deputy Managing Director for Financial and Management Affairs at KAC, Mohammad Al-Hilal, told reporters the Airways will start this study in cooperation with the UN Development Program the beginning of this year to boost operating revenues.

He added the study will include operating plans, increasing quality of operations, and reviewing the Airways' current network among other things in order to increase KAC's ability to compete in the region.

The study will offer a chance to compare the current fleet with the suggested fleet, said Al-Hilal.

He added the implementation of the plan has been slow due to bureaucracy.

Kuwait leasing firm increases fleet to 80 aircraft

October 2, 2006

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait's Aviation Lease and Finance Company (ALAFCO) is planning to increase its fleet to 80 aircraft by 2015, up from the current 18, the company chairman said Sunday.

During Dubai air show last year, ALAFCO ordered 12 Airbus A350-800 aircraft valued at around $2 billion, with an option for six more.

"We also intend to order another 40 smaller aircraft of Airbus A-320 and Boeing 737 over the next nine years," ALAFCO chairman Ahmad Al Zabin told a press conference held to announce the listing of the company on the Kuwait bourse. Trading in the company's shares will start Monday.

Zabin said the company's fleet will increase by 10 aircraft next year. ALAFCO is also managing 15 leased planes in favor of other owners.

Jointly owned by Kuwait Finance House (KFH), the emirate's leading Islamic bank, and the state-owned Kuwait Airways Corp (KAC), the company has long-term lease contracts with nine international companies including Indian, Chinese and Yemeni airlines.
