Last time I went there in 2005 they advertised that they had direct service to cities in North America and Europe (LA, Vancouver, Paris). Are there any scheduled flights like that, or is Shenzhen a primarily domestic airport?

I think they have international flights to some of those southeast and east asian cities, and some of those european cities. Not sure if it is true, but I heard that they have flights to chicago and new york.
by the way, does anyone know when the expansion will be completed? and how many gates will it have after the completion?

Its amazing how Foster's Hong Kong airports design influenced other airports around the world. Look at the front departure hall area its looks quite similar to HKIA, Beijing's capital T3 of course is another airport that evolves from the HKIA, and then theres the new Doha International airport.

btw i thought they were gonna choose the C/horseshoe shaped design for Shenzhen. I saw the rendering before somewhere in this site.

I noticed on Google Earth how small Shenzhen's airport is for a city of its size.

Glad to read that it is being expanded.

Most airports in China are really small compared to their city size. Most towns in the US with population half a million or so have a bigger airport than a Chinese city with population well over a million.

Actually, HKIA's design could be traced to Stansted, which came into operation prior.

Wow, the airplane routes in the Pearl River Delta are going to be quite complex what with the region having three major airports in close proximity to one another.

Will the Shenzhen Airport be connected to the DT area via rail?
