Maybe not so soon. Guangzhou Baiyun will be a 50 mln pax airport this year while Shenzhen Baoan just passed 30 mln.

I wonder if there are any plans to improve connection between SZX and CAN? I know there are plans for a direct rail link between SZX and HKG which will improve transit for connecting flights. But what about SZX-CAN? How would you get there fast for a connecting flight? I know there are many railway projects in the PRD but will some of them be dedicated to airport connections? Such big airports so close to each other simply ask to have direct rail connections for fast and efficient transfers.

It just looks like an architectural feature to me. If you look closely, you can see through some of the joins in the panels to the roof of the terminal.

If it is an architectural feature, it may be set too low. A part of the top of the shop is cut away by it.

Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway(Suiguanshen Line) will connect Baiyun Airport and Shenzhen Airport (maybe Hong Kong Airport via Shenzhen-Hong Kong West Railway, not sure)

i think the shops are additionally set or planned after the structure of the terminal has been built... or to follow some local regulation and codes...

This seems to be the case: look to the far left of the photo showing the white tube in question and you will see the "arrow-shaped" (for want of a better word) side wall of an originally planned retail unit. Look through the other photos further upthread or refer to the architects' original website (fuksas.it) to discover their intent of placing these structures with level ceilings but these unusually-shaped side walls throughout the concourses.

Yet placing more shops wherever they may seem to fit (or not, as shown here) with no regard to the original plans is a plague befalling airports all over the world: plopping a retail stall onto the concourse floor anywhere where there are a few empty square meters makes more commercial sense than giving a damn about the architects' overall original vision...

only the sector in Dongguan and Xintang station just across the border in Guangzhou is under construction.
The part in Shenzhen has not begun yet due to the new plan of "Grand Airport Developing Area" and newly added Shenzhen Airport T4.
The part to Baiyun Airport is the extension from Xintang and no clear master plan published for this part yet.

After browsing through the architect's website, I'm convinced that those stalls were not in the original design. The main theme of this terminal should be hexagon and tube. You can obviously see that those originally planned stalls are in hexagon shapes but those newly added ones are just boxy, which do not match with the whole design theme.
