I love new Chinese airports. Especially when the concrete is still fresh looking. The terminal looks great from all angles.

Green Terminal C touted

▲An artificial tree inside Shenzhen International Airport’s Terminal C. The tree, along with other “air-conditioning trees,” will emit cool air through pipes and vents connecting with four big tanks in the airport’s energy center.

▲Solar panels installed on rooftops in the airport’s logistics park.

SHENZHEN International Airport authorities are touting energy conservation and efficiency measures at the airport’s new Terminal C, which is scheduled to open Nov. 14.
Authorities said the terminal has a double-skin canopy that utilizes natural light to reduce energy consumption. The roof’s inner skin is made of a fine net that allows diffused sunlight to fill the terminal, creating a pleasant indoor atmosphere and potentially saving about 4.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, they said.
The design is intended to take advantage of the hot summers and warm winters in subtropical Shenzhen, which gets an average of 1,934 hours of sunlight a year.
The roof’s weatherproof, sound- and thermal-insulated outer skin serves as a barrier to aviation noise and excessive thermal exchange, authorities added.
Terminal C will be built with about 52,000 tons of steel, about 35 percent less than the original design, as a Beijing company is optimizing the steel used for the roof.
The terminal’s design incorporates other sustainable concepts and technologies including chilled-water storage, zoned air-conditioning, heat recovery and a solar hot water system, authorities said. Those features could cut energy costs by 25 percent annually and make the terminal the first green-building-and-star-label-certified airport terminal in China.
Artificial trees inside the terminal will emit cool air through pipes and vents connecting with four big tanks in the airport’s energy center, which is southwest of the terminal.
Authorities said the energy center will use 12 cooling machines to chill water to 5-7 degrees Celsius. The water will then be pumped through the terminal and cool air will be emitted through the so-called “air-conditioning trees” after water-air exchanges.
Authorities said the 16,060 solar panels installed on rooftops in the airport’s logistics park could help replace 3,600 tons of coal and reduce emissions totaling 9,970 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
The terminal could reuse about 2.8 million tons of rainwater per year for plant irrigation and bathrooms.
Technology utilized along 75 passages linking boarding gates and planes could charge planes, reduce fuel costs, help save 34,286 tons of coal a year and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 85,500 tons per year.
