The original airport was not open in the 70's but in early 90's.

However the second runway was built recently and so is the T3. Threfore it is essentially a new airport built on the location of the old one.

If you'll look at the map you'll see what I mean.

I know! How in the world are they going to keep all that white surfaces clean all the time if you are going to have 30-45 million passengers a year through that terminal. I love it.

Looks like a good place to do LSD.
Seriously, this does look like by far the most stunning airport terminal ever. I just hope they'll manage to keep it in perfect condition as it looks now.

SZ eyeing 2nd airport

Han Ximin
[email protected]

SHENZHEN officials intend to build a second airport in the city — possibly in Pingshan New Area — but no plans have been developed yet, Shenzhen’s transportation commission said yesterday.
The statement came in response to a suggestion made by a local transportation expert over the weekend.
Deng Yaoqing, president of the Pan Pearl River Delta Innovation and Development Research Institute, suggested at a Sunday forum that the city build another airport. As a potential site, Deng suggested Pingshan, which offers proximity to downtown Shenzhen, delta cities and Hong Kong.
Deng even gave four options for locations, one each in the south, north, northeast and southeast region of the new area, which borders Huizhou.
An airport in Pingshan could become a new transportation hub by providing connections to the Xiamen-Shenzhen and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail lines. Xincheng Station in Pingshan is only 40 kilometers from Futian and 69 kilometers from West Kowloon.
It will take less than 30 minutes to reach central districts of Shenzhen and Hong Kong when the high-speed rail opens.
Deng has explored the feasibility of a second airport in Shenzhen since 2008, as the head of a team in Pingshan. He concluded in his five-year, phased report that it is imperative for the city to consider a second airport.
“Terminal C, which will open soon, is designed to handle 45 million passengers and 450 tons of cargo a year by 2020. But what will Shenzhen do after that?” Deng asked at the forum.
The opening of high-speed rails will bring opportunities for Shenzhen’s economy and construction. Shenzhen International Airport, which is located in the city’s northwest, is surrounded by four airports: one each in Macao, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Zhuhai. But it can’t reach its full potential, Deng said, because of its distance from Yantian, Pingshan, Dapeng and Longgang, which are rich in tourism resources, and its location of along the Pearl River.
“Major Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai have two airports, while world cities like New York and London have more than two airports,” Deng said.
Deng said Beijing Capital International Airport has three runways and another airport is slated to start construction only 48 kilometers from Tian’anmen. Shanghai’s second airport, Pudong International Airport, has been operating for 14 years.

I guess this might be useful, but I think Shenzhen's airport right now is perfectly fine I think they should build a new airport like in 2020 or 2030 because is Shenzhen reached the passenger limit? I don't think so with this new terminal or what. Its probably useful some way but i think they should keep use of Baoan first until its the time to change it.

There are 5 airports in the Pearl River Delta. There is no airspace left for one more. Better to think about how to utilize the empty Zhuhai and Macau airports first.

or build one more runway and re-use the existing terminal A and B.

Terminal A and B are decent ones, they even have metro connection. An underground APM will work well to connect them with T3.

The airspace is mainly occupied by the military air force. They should release more airspace for civil use. Otherwise it would be a waste of money to invest majestic airport infrastructure while high delay rate remains. Almost all airports in China are among the worst ones in punctuality and HKG suffers from the delays in mainland too.
