Airport doubling size of cargo area
2013-November-13 08:53
Shenzhen Daily

THE first phase of Shenzhen International Airport’s western cargo area is located south of the new Terminal C, opens Nov. 28 and covers 77,000 square meters, more than double the size of the current cargo area for domestic flights, airport authorities said Monday.

Along with the existing eastern cargo area, which is located south of Terminal B and spans 215,000 square meters, the airport’s cargo- and mail-handling capacity is expected to reach 2 million tons a year, authorities said.

The western cargo area eventually will cover 228,000 square meters and be the main area for handling cargo for all domestic and non-commercial flights.

The city government gave Shenzhen’s airport approval in October to conduct cross-border e-business on a trial basis. The city is applying to the General Administration of Customs to handle export business from e-commerce on a trial basis. That approval is expected to be granted at the end of the year, local Chinese-language media reported.

According to the airport’s 12th five-year program, cargo and mail turnover at the airport is expected to reach 1 million tons by the end of 2015. Express cargo delivery will account for more than 60 percent of the total cargo business, similar to the level in developed countries such as the United States.

Issues with gates

Big terminals are good but on the sad part people have to do so much walking to reach gates. Even though some airports have walkways and people movers, walking is still difficult especially when you have elders and infant

I got to hear that reaching the farthest gate on this new terminal takes about 25 mins!

Do they expect a significant increase in the number of passengers in the short term after they open the new terminal? Similar to Kunming for example.

The problem for Shenzhen is the lack of permitted routes for commercial flights in this area of the sky. normally they will be fit for Guangzhou's need first, then Shenzhen.

There are no other big airport close to Kunming Changshui, so they can accept more flights easily. For shenzhen, the sky above is pretty full already.

The strategy for Shenzhen Airport Group is to expand its domestic coverage as well as to open new destinations in southeast asia. there is potential of growth but won't be as impressive as Changshui did.

How could it take an average person 25 minutes to walk 800 meters?

Changshui's problem is the domestic carriers are finding it difficult to open new international routes from there especially inter continental routes due to the limited numbers of wide bodied long distance jets in service with domestic carriers. Until sufficient numbers of suitable aircraft arrive I can't see that situation changing.

Shenzhen airport traffic registered a 14.4% y/y passenger increase in October.

Once the new terminal is open I wonder if it will grow even faster. Should join the world top 30 in a short term.

I'm wondering how long it will be until they decide to build another new terminal?

Aren't there meant to be other phases of this terminal? Like phase two and phase three? At least this is what I understood reading project descriptions some time ago. By 2030 or so the terminal (or additional terminals if you like) should pretty much double in size from the current T3 size.
