Shanghai is amazing. This tower just confirms it. Hope Shanghai can solve its pollution problem, it kinda takes the attractiveness of all those amazing buildings away (a little)

I heard Shanghai is practically sinking with all the buildings going up and the fact the soil isn't the greatest. I assume this is still happening?

Sinking? Never heard of that. I assume that with all those construction going on it must be Pudong which is sinking. Yet i still don't think the chinese government would have approved so many buildings to be constructed in pudong unless the sinking has stopped.

I've heard about the sinking thing but I take it with a grain of salt. If the soil is unstable you usually dig down until you hit bedrock with large buildings. I give nature a little more credit. All the weight of the buildings constructed isn't going to break the land. There's some guy that predicts earthquakes based on rainfall. Water is pretty heavy, so when rain falls and collects on land it's suppose to add stress to fault areas. Again I'll give the balance of nature more respect than that, but I'll give that theory more credibility than believing the weight of mass construction causes large sections of land to sink all together.

It's just like when people say Cailornia was going to fall into the ocean. Yeah in a period of millions of eons maybe.

The whole building will look amazing in the skyline. I will deifntly be paying a visit to Shanghai in the future. The shape is just so sleek. I'm glad they changed the design from a circular hole to a rectangular one. It fits in more. The render up there really looks real and impressive.

100% agree!

Shanghai is basically all at sea level and is built on mud. When they built all the grand old heaps on the bund they had to float them on concrete rafts to stop them sinking into the river and still had to allow for a fair amount of settling. I'm not sure this is relevant to the new and much taller towers as they have far deeper foundations. I assume the wfc goes down to bedrock. Anyone know this for sure?
As for pudong sinking, well puxi is MUCH more heavily built up so I'd guess it would be worse there if it were true. There were stories about limiting the density in Pudong but it's hard to tell whether this was because of sinking, transport difficulties if it gets too dense, or because some of the proposals were just plain too expensive to be justifiable and were being replaced with smaller towers. I can see how buildings might sink into the land (raising the surrounding area slightly in the process) but I can't see how a whole area could sink from the weight of a few towers. The combined mass of all the towers in Pudong must be in the same order as (and probably much less than) an extra metre or so of mud spread accross the same area.

Pudong is already rather sparsely densed as a financial area compared to others and its rather green. But i guess the soil can be that unstable that it cannot sustain even sparsely densed skyscrapers.
