well yes it was always going to be the later phase, but if the later phase doesnt have a tenent lined up, its unlikely to start until that changes!

Four-star Hilton Doubletree hotel to open at Edgbaston Mill

A high-profile Birmingham development has lived up to its early promise after securing a hotel set to rival anything already in the city.

Hilton Doubletree will open a 200-bedroom hotel as the centrepoint of the Edgbaston Mill opposite the world-famous cricket ground which landlord Calthorpe Estates claims will “rub shoulders with the Hyatt”.

The announcement is a major boost for the scheme that first came to the drawing board eight years ago and then stalled in the downturn when a number of occupiers including Express by Holiday Inn cancelled their interest after HBOS withdrew its funding.


At the end of last year Calthorpe Estates, which has sold the site to Wylam Investments (Edgbaston Holdings) on a long lease, announced it had secured planning permission for a new hotel on the site.

Calthorpe’s director of development Ralph Minott said the high class Hilton brand was a great result for the scheme.

“This is a hotel that will be rubbing shoulders with the Hyatt,” he said.

“It will be a top quality four star operation with 200 bedrooms, a health club and spa, two restaurants and a coffee shop and I think with this project Calthorpe Estates has a better wrap-around solution than the original Edgbaston Mill proposal

Had a quick look round the new Aldi tonight. Ellbrown's shots above dont do justice to just how bad this one is! They are probably the only acceptable view of the thing. You cant even see in from the main road as the small section of glass is reflective, they seem to have had to put up a big ugly sign saying the store is open as its impossible to tell as you go past. The view from the other side is much worse than the renders. Worrying this can go ahead really, if this gets built then what's the point objecting to anything? The residents of the flats must be fuming, if they have any sense.

You should see the Aldi in Sparkbrook. The main entrance is on the side like this one, and it has a long brick wall on the Stratford Road. They even extended it a few years ago.

On passing this evening noticed some new fencing being erected around the site of the Doubletree Hilton hotel site...could be about to get underway

Yeah it's been up for about a week on Edgbaston Road side if plot. Keep hoping to pass it and notice signs of life but new hoardings are ok for now.

We've had confirmation that the work for the 200-bed hotel and leisure facility will be starting on 19th September. Hoardings have been going up this week in preparation

My name is Don.I am currently researching a first novel,Edgbaston Millieux, set in and around the area quoted in this thread.The forthcoming Hilton Double Tree will play a pivotal role in the storyline.Think Algonquin Hotel,1920's New York City-then look at the 'shape' of the outdoor 'air terrace' between the main building and leisure complex.More anon...
