Well, it is definitely obvious when the cable car goes above the sector under construction.

Sesame Street ride to open at Universal Studios S'pore
By Monica Kotwani | Posted: 24 May 2012 1633 hrs

SINGAPORE: It will be a trip down memory lane for many Singaporeans when the Sesame Street Theme Park Ride opens at Universal Studios Singapore later this year.

It is the first Sesame Street ride in Southeast Asia and only one of three in the world.

But for those who cannot wait, there is also something else in store these June holidays.

Visitors to Universal Studios Singapore will get to meet eight Sesame Street characters, including Bert, Oscar and Cookie Monster, as they perform three shows daily and get interactive with audiences from Monday.

The theme park ride will open later this year and will be located at the corner of 'New York Street', one of seven themed zones in Universal Studios.

Vice-president of Entertainment at Resorts World Sentosa, Andrea Teo, said: "I think it's a very unique ride. It's got the same Sesame Street kind of humour, it's a bit wacky, it's a bit way-out-there. it'll make you laugh and because it's a ride, it also gives you a bit of a thrill."

Visitors can also have a buffet breakfast experience with the Sesame Street characters later this year.

Some news on the Marina Life Park.

Quote:
Marine Life Park reaches out to young to promote conservation
By Ng Puay Leng | Posted: 19 August 2012 1924 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa is reaching out to the young to promote conservation even before it opens at the end of the year.

It's organising tours to its Marine Aquaculture & Research Centre in Lim Chu Kang.

The facility is the temporary home of the sea creatures that will call the Marine Life Park its home.

And students from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science are the first to check out how the centre is looking after its residents.

Chu Yao Quan said: "Before I came to this tour, I didn't know there are so many conditions that have to be taken care of for the fishes."

Director of Conservation & Education of Marine Life Park, Biswajit Guha, said: "It's really a self-contained world-class facility. And currently it's being used as a quarantine area for animals that will eventually be at Marine Life Park. But what's also very key is the systems that we have in place. Marine aquaculture and essentially maintaining fish in a managed situation has a lot of science behind it. And that is something which our experts and specialists, aquarists, life support specialists, veterinarians, have many years of expertise in."

Some news on RWS.

Quote:
RWS fined S$600,000 for partially reimbursing entry levy
Posted: 12 September 2012 1736 hrs

SINGAPORE: Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has been fined S$600,000 for breaching social safeguards against problem gambling by partially reimbursing the annual entry levy for about 3,400 local casino patrons.

Several of its employees are being investigated by the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) for possible criminal offences.

The Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore (CRA) said on Wednesday that the fine of S$600,000 is the highest single financial penalty imposed so far for breaching the Casino Control Act (CCA).

It started investigations after it was informed by the public that they had received complimentary Universal Studios Singapore (USS) tickets when they renewed their annual entry levies.

It found that between February 1, 2011 and May 31, 2011, RWS staff members carried out a marketing programme, giving incentives such as USS tickets, concert tickets and hotel accommodation to locals when they bought or renewed their annual entry levies.

About 3,400 local casino patrons were partially reimbursed the cost of the annual entry levy.

The CRA said although the marketing programme was carried out by a handful of RWS' staff members, it holds RWS responsible for its employees' actions.

RWS had also breached CRA's reporting requirements, as it did not submit details of this marketing programme to the authority.

This breach has been taken into consideration by the CRA.

During the investigations, CRA also discovered that certain documents submitted by RWS staff members to CRA could have been forged.

False or misleading information could have been provided to CRA.

The CRA referred these cases to the CAD for investigation into possible criminal offences.

The CRA is also investigating the culpability of the employees involved to ascertain whether they had breached the CCA, as well as conditions of their Special Employee Licences.

In a separate statement, the CAD said it will be charging three employees from RWS' Gaming Services Department - Lee Poh Yee, Lim Tze Chean and Sim Bee Ling - in court on September 13.

Lee, the department's senior vice president, will be charged with providing false information to CRA inspectors.

Lim, the department's vice president of VIP Services, will be charged for providing false information to CRA inspectors and forgery.

Sim, the department's asistant manager of VIP Services, will be charged for abetment of forgery.

CAD started investigations on September 19, 2011 after receiving information from the CRA.

The casino watchdog stressed that the entry levy is one of many social safeguards put in place to address problem gambling.

Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents have to pay an annual entry levy of S$2,000 or a daily entry levy of S$100 per 24-hour entry to the casinos.

Casino operators cannot refund or reimburse the entry levy, whether directly or indirectly.

The CRA said it has stressed this requirement several times to the casino operators and this requirement is clearly spelt out in the CCA.

Chief executive of CRA, Mr Lau Peet Meng, pointed out that this is the second time RWS has breached the law involving the reimbursement of entry levy.

He said the CRA has asked the operator to review its casino marketing programmes and promotions to ensure that there are no further direct or indirect reimbursements of the entry levy.

He said even though RWS has put in place measures to strengthen its compliance processes, the CRA is sending a clear signal to the operator to comply fully with the social safeguards to protect locals at all times.

"While we note that RWS has put in place measures to strengthen its compliance processes as a result of this breach, CRA is sending a clear signal to the operator that it should comply fully with the social safeguards put in place to protect locals. Compliance to our laws and regulations must be strictly adhered to at all times," he said.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade & Industry, Mr S Iswaran, said the CRA has firmly dealt with this repeat breach by RWS.

He said the financial penalty imposed reflects the tough stance the CRA takes in maintaining the integrity of Singapore's casino gaming industry and social safeguards.

Mr Iswaran said the CRA will continue to closely monitor and assess the casino operators' compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and take appropriate disciplinary actions if there are breaches.

In an email response, RWS said when the breaches came to light, a Board of Inquiry was appointed to conduct a full and independent investigation.

It added that the board was tasked to review and recommend changes in internal processes, training or verification methods.

The board also suggested training the staff on compliance policies and the setting up of such a committee.

The recommendations have been implemented.

Marine Life Park to open to public ahead of RWS official opening

SINGAPORE: Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) said it targets to bring in 16 million visitors next year.

The integrated resort also announced that its second anchor attraction - the Marine Life Park - will open days ahead of RWS' official opening on December 7.

The exact date of the park's opening was not given to the media.

The Marine Life Park will be the world's largest oceanarium and will house more than 100,000 marine animals.

These include 25 dolphins, which will be part of the park's interactive programme that starts next year.

The dolphins were the subject of controversy last year, with some animal welfare groups calling for them to be freed.

In response to critics, Mr Biswajit Guha, director of Education and Conservation at the Marine Life Park, said: "The dolphins are doing very well, 25 of them (are) in the Philippines. I don't have any firmed up dates yet to share with you at this stage about when they'll be arriving.

"Essentially, all of the standards meet and in fact exceed the guidelines set by the American Zoos and Aquariums Association, as well as the Alliance for Marine Mammals Parks and Aquariums. In that respect, we're fully confident that the dolphins will receive the best care possible."

Mr Guha added the Marine Life Park is open to continue working with non-government organisations (NGOs) and other agencies that focus on marine education and conservation.

He said they welcome the opportunity to collaborate on such issues.

RWS first opened to the public in 2010 and has attracted some 30 million visitors since then.

Some news on the dolphins for the new attraction.

Acquisition of 25 dolphins in line with global requirements: Marine Life Park
Posted: 13 October 2012 1716 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Marine Life Park said its acquisition of 25 Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins caught in the wild, followed international requirements.

A spokesman of Marine Life Park said Saturday that they are in line with the requirements of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which regulates the trade of animals to protect wildlife species from extinction.

The spokesman had said so in response to queries from Channel NewsAsia on a report that a court in the Philippines has moved to stop the 25 dolphins from being re-exported to Singapore.

This followed calls from environmentalists and activists to prevent the transfer of the mammals, which are housed temporarily in Manila before being sent to Marine Life Park.

A report on the website of The Philippine Star said a Quezon City court decided on Friday to stop the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources from issuing a permit to re-export the 25 dolphins in Ocean Adventure Park in Subic.

The report added that the court granted a petition by animal welfare groups and issued a 72-hour "temporary environment protection order" preventing the re-export of the dolphins.

The dolphins were imported from the Solomon Islands in 2008, 2009, and 2011 and brought to Subic for training while Marine Life Park was under construction.

The Philippine report said the court decided to stop the 're-exportation' on the grounds that doing so would cause irreparable damage to the dolphins.

Responding to the report, the spokesman of Marine Life Park said on Saturday that the movement of marine animals, including dolphins, is governed by the United Nations Environment Programme which upholds the policies of CITES.

Marine Life Park's spokesman said the dolphins are currently doing well in the Philippines.

He added that the Marine Life Park has an experienced team of animal experts who collectively represent over 300 years of experience working in more than 60 reputable zoological facilities around the world.

"With a mission to promote marine education, conservation and research, Marine Life Park strives to offer an educational and memorable experience that inspires a generation of stewards for the environment," he said.

Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) will have the world's largest oceanarium with more than 100,000 marine creatures when it opens ahead of RWS's official opening on December 7.

Animal activists, such as Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES) in Singapore, have been lobbying to get the wild-caught dolphins released back to their natural habitat.

ACRES said on Saturday that they are delighted that the Philippines government is reviewing the re-export of the dolphins, adding that the capture of these dolphins was unsustainable, and that it would be a violation of Philippine law to allow these dolphins to be re-exported to Singapore.

The court order has been lifted.

Philippine court lifts order preventing export of dolphins to S'pore
Posted: 17 October 2012 2017 hrs

SINGAPORE - A Philippine court on Wednesday lifted the temporary environment protection order preventing its 25 captive dolphins from being exported to Singapore.

A Quezon City court on Saturday issued a 72-hour temporary environment protection order to block the export of the dolphins, which were headed to the Resorts World Sentosa's (RWS) Marine Life Park, after animal rights groups there filed a civil suit.

A RWS spokesperson said the integrated resort is "pleased that the court has decided to lift the temporary environment protection order".

"Our dolphins are doing well under the care of our team of experienced experts, and we look forward to welcoming them to Singapore," said the spokesperson.

"We regret that the group which initiated this court action had gone on various public platforms with inaccurate statements pertaining to our dolphins, perpetuating the same falsehoods that we had repeatedly made numerous clarifications and corrections to in the past," he added.

The spokesperson reiterated that the resort's acquisition of the 25 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins adhere to regulations governed by the United Nations Environment Programme under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

He added that the Marine Life Park is also set up for, and is preparing for accreditation with international accreditation bodies on its standards of animal husbandry, veterinary care and facility.

In a statement, the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) said it "regrets" that the court lifted the temporary environment protection order, "despite the strong evidence presented and a strong ruling previously".

"This fight is far from over, we will file a motion for reconsideration," said Acres.

It added that it will be launching the next phase of its campaign in Singapore shortly to increase the pressure on RWS to "respond positively to public concerns about the plight of the dolphins".

ACRES to appeal against dolphins being sent to RWS

SINGAPORE: Animal rights groups in Singapore and the Philippines have appealed to the Philippine court to prevent 25 dolphins from being exported to Singapore's Marine Life Park.

A 72-hour protection order has been lifted, but the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) is still fighting to prevent the export of the dolphins to the marine park in Sentosa.

The temporary environment protection order was issued last week after some animal rights groups in the Philippines filed a civil suit.

The order barred the shipment of dolphins caught in the waters of Solomon Islands to the Marine Life Park.

The court had earlier decided on this on the grounds that doing so would cause irreparable damage to the dolphins, which are currently kept at Ocean Adventure Park in Subic.

ACRES is requesting for the judge who lifted the temporary environment protection order to step down.

Chief executive of ACRES, Louis Ng, said: "We're also going to ask that the judge recuse herself. She stated in the courts that these dolphins are pets. You can't say that these dolphins are pets, because they are wild animals.

"We're hopeful that the courts will review this case, follow the recommendations of the first judge who reviewed the scientific literature available and realise that this trade is unsustainable."

ACRES is also launching a website to build public support for its campaign to send the dolphins back to the Solomon Islands.

The animal rights group has proposed that the dolphins spend about 20 months in Solomon Islands getting used to their natural habitat before they are released into the wild.
