@aml1006

Great video and great idea. It seems like that SE corner of Barcelona is building up a bit of a cluster in tall buildings. Are there strict restrictions which would prohibit the construction of a real skyscraper? This seems like the most suitable area for it (and the view from a glittering Med would be amazing and possibly unrivalled in Europe).

On a completely different note, something I've long wondered; has there ever been plans to consolidate Barcelona like NYC had over 110 years ago and London did in 1965 by expanding the administrative zone in recognition of urbanisation? The actual urban area (as opposed to metro area) is 803km2 with 4.2m people, roughly the same area as NYC minus its water, and about 40% smaller than London. The metro already extends well outside the political boundaries in many cases.

don`t compare Barcelona with N.Y.C. ! this is ridiculous. Barcelona got 1,6 million people
and the metroarea 4,6 !

My point was to show that it wouldn't be that big in actual geographical size.

Barcelona has over 5 million I believe in its metro area, but that isn't the same thing as urban area. Those 5 million plus are spread over a much greater area which on its outer sphere is sparsely populated and quite distant from the 'core'. But the 4 million or so in the urban area make up one consistent and compact urbanisation which better reflects today's Barcelona than the political boundaries which were established over a century ago.

Well, there are legal restrictions from the city council, although the maximum height changes: is different in Glòries square than in Eixample (the central district).
But the main obstacle is that we don't have enterprises that really need to built skyscrapers. They're expensive and hard to maintain, and the most important Catalan enterprises have enough squared meters of offices. In the future, maybe.

Makes sense. Although, what about residential buildings? Does Barcelona (like most major European cities) not have insufficient housing supply?

There are also mixed-used schemes, which aren't really common in Western Europe (amazing to think the Shard is the first of its type in London, and I don't know how many exist in Paris or Frankfurt). But, yes, financial services normally require large floor-plates for trading space, hence they are major drivers for skyscrapers, and Barcelona (appears to) lacks those.

Barcelona is famous for having many empty apartments, so there is room for renovation of traditional apartments. And building new ones too, although new land is scarce in the city and the conurbation. And don't forget that soil price is expensive too. I'm afraid that for the time being a residential skyscraper in Barcelona is a dream.

The renovation of former BCN buildings is also the key for the economic recovery of this kind of citys (in Spain), So better not to spend money in new buildings when the city is plenty of empty ones...

Great idea. My home town supposedly has between 100,000-250,000 empty buildings and a shortage of housing. What a waste.

Love that second to last pic absalon just posted.
