Historical Barcelona is such an inspiring, creative, vivid and iconic place. Think of Gaudí's Modernisme and the amazing Art Nouveau in Eixample and elsewhere.

But all this contemporary dull, faceless and powerless modernist architecture totally contrasts the character of the city...

I think you're staying on the topic.
There are several nuances and facets in the architecture and urbanism of Barcelona, not only Gaudí and Cerdá, there is a medieval component (although a part of the Gothic quarter is recreated) and of course the vanguard architecture.
At the end of the 80's, in the 90's and early 2000's Barcelona became the best architecture laboratory in Europe, along with London and Berlin, with wonderful examples of Foster, Meier, Isozaki, Nouvel, Perrault, Chipperfield, Toyo Ito, de Meuron, Siza, Miralles, Moneo, Bofill, Calatrava ......
It is true that with the economic crisis loses part of this momentum and canceled wonderful projects of Gehry, Zaha Hadid and MVRDV. Probably Milan has occupied this place as the most dynamic city in southern Europe in vanguard architecture, but still in Barcelona they continue to make fantastic examples of contemporary architecture and we are seeing it continuously in these pages.

I quite agree with you. There are many reasons behind this. One of them is the financial crysis, which paralized many of those appealing projects (but also more expensive), and some of them won't ever reach light. One clear example is the Spiralling Tower by Zaha Hadid, or the Torre de la Sagrera, designed by Gehry. The projects that survived are smaller, and with less investment, so it means a reduction in building quality.

Another reason is the current city council. They have focused more into social housing (decent quality, but ordinary), and have paralized many other interesting projects: hotels, infrastructures, etc.

What I post are buildings and projects from all Barcelona, including the metropolitan area. Suburbs like Hospitalet or Badalona have currently more projects going on than many districts of Barcelona. Suburbs in Barcelona are much more modest, some places are even poor, and investment amount isn't very large.

In the other hand, Eixample and the city centre have very high prices, making it very difficult to do projects. Nowadays there is nothing else than foreign and local speculation with existing buildings.

All in all, there are nice modern buildings around Barcelona, but most of them completed before the crysis. The developing [email protected] District is having quite a comeback these days, so that's why we have reasons to be happier than we were during the crysis.

I will leave this comment with pictures of the Spiralling Tower and Torre de la Sagrera, projects that got cancelled:

Spiralling Tower (cancelled)

Torre de la Sagrera (cancelled)

^ That's more of the expressive, dynamic and joyful architecture I had in mind indeed!
Though I think Barcelona has a great chance of creating its own distinct contemporary style once again, in the spirit of Gaudí and other masters. It's a great city with great potentials, unleash them!

Glòries International Contest

- 95 architect studios competed in the contest to build around 300 residential units next to Glòries square. 80% of the units will be public, with affordable rent prices. Buildings will range from 7 to 11 floors.

- The project will be done in the city block within Carrer Castillejos, Casp, Àlaba and Gran Vía. Currently in the site there are temporary gardens, "Jardins del Bosquet dels Encants", where they grow trees for the future Glòries park.

- Yesterday winners were announced, and the procedure is the following:
  • Each studio had to generally design the entire city block, from the urban plan to the building design.
  • Winner of the urban plan proposal is the one that will be built.
  • There are 4 design winners, each one with a slogan, and each studio will have to adapt the winning design to the assigned plot. There are 4 plots in total, 70 units per each building.
  • This project is independent from the Glòries park and tunnels, and won't be affected by the cancellation of Glòries tunnels contract.
  • This particular process will allow the city block to mantain the heterogenity shown in all the Eixample district.

Urban plan winner

Plot D "Buits a les Glòries"

Plot B "Del carrer a casa"

Plot A "La comunitat habitacional"

Plot C "Habitatge i ciutat"

PDU Gran Via masterplan

The PDU Gran Via is doing its first steps. Today it was announced that tomorrow, friday 5th May, the "Consorci per la Reforma de la Granvia de L'Hospitalet de Llobregat" will bid the project of burial of some sections of the Gran Via, in a similar way it was done in Plaça Europa.

C-31 motorway burial
  • Affected area: 1km
  • 4 buried sections, making a total of 400m. Construction of a new roundabout

PDU Gran Via masterplan facts

- There are 3 sectors in this masterplan:
  • Sector 1: Area around the Biopol Mèdic, an important area for medicine and research (2 hospitals and multiple research facilities, including the Medicine Campus of the University of Barcelona). This sector will have the largest amount of urban developement, and the largest office cluster compiled in the masterplan.
  • Sector 2: Cal Trabal is the last farming area in Hospitalet, and it's the most controversial sector. The fields are currently run by private owners, but with this masterplan it will become a 30ha (300.000 m2) park, with social market gardens. This park, so you can compare, will be as large as Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona (counting the total extension of the city zoo as well).
  • Sector 3: Small office cluster, replacing the current large logistic parking.

- This masterplan affects 105 ha (1.050.000 m2), which is the 8% of the total surface of the city of Hospitalet de Llobregat, the main suburb city of Barcelona.

- Building uses will be almost entirely offices and service sector, and there will be 5 hotels.

- The maximum total building surface will be 636.000 m2.

- Maximum height allowed in some plots will be 105m, 29 floors.

Future plans and pictures of the current state

Sector 1: Biopol mèdic

Sector 2 & 3
