Escola Industrial

- Restoration and refurbishment works in the main hall of the Escolta Industrial will start on monday.

- For those who may not know, the Escola Industrial is a large complex of Art Nouveau buildings firstly built in 1869 to be industries, but in 1908 they were restored to allocate the campus for engineering, industrial and work campus.

- Diputaciˇ de Barcelona (Barcelona province authorities) are currently moving to the campus, replacing the current faculties of UPC University.

- The main hall will become a concert hall, adaptable to many other environments, like congress or other events.

- The hall will be named Albert Einstein, in honour to the genius, as he visited the Escola Industrial in February 1923.

- Construction works will start next monday, and will be completed in 2 years.

- Location: Carrer del Comte d'Urgell, 187.

- Budget: 4,9 M euros.

- Architects: Udeu Arquitectura (1st prize of the contest).

Col˛nia Castells

- Last days of the old houses of the lost Col˛nia Castells, a factory complex with workers residences, located in Les Corts.

- 23 houses from the 1920s will be demolished, after the neighbours are rellocated during this summer. The bad condition of the houses is the main reason given to not preserve the buildings.

- Location: Carrer Montnegre / Equador.

- 10.000 m2 park will replace the homes, and it is said that there will be a site in memory of the industrial past of Col˛nia Castells.

- The expansion building of the law faculty has been recently completed. The design was inspired to give continuity to the old faculty building from 1957.

I quite agree with you ! It was a nice old looking building, but fortunately there are a huge amount of developments of the same style and age all around Barcelona. The bad thing about it is that the replacement is very ordinary, and doesn't improve at all the streetscape.

The low quality in the residential promotions is something very common in this developer, Corp, which is always using the same materials, with zero innovation.

The development right next to it (Travessera de GrÓcia,11) is much more interesting, in my opinion. It is a pity this residential won't top the quality of the office building next to it.

About the fact that the current projects are overall small is, in fact, due to two reasons. The first is the economical crysis, that paralized every single important project in the city, and only the small ones with small investment could go through it. The second reason is the current City Council, which extremely opposes any development taller than 50m, as they associate it with speculation.
