The secrets of Gaudí's first house, uncovered

The Casa Vicens returns to show its best side. The first house designed by the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí has undergone a deep rehabilitation to live a new stage as a museum.

The laborious restoration of almost three years of the building, the eighth cataloged as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2005 in the Catalan capital, was presented to the media on Monday in the midst of great anticipation before this architectural jewel opens to the public next November 16th. From November 2 to 5 the result of the intervention will be shown to the residents of the neighborhood.

The Casa Vicens, built between 1883 and 1885 and considered a prelude to Catalan modernism, seems to be taken from a fairy tale and although it is half hidden, it does not go unnoticed in the Gràcia neighborhood, on Carolines street.

"Gaudí was 31 years old and in this house is the first time he can act as an orchestra director, he deals directly with the client," says Joan Abellà, director of the Casa Vicens Museum.

Restoring Gaudí has not been an easy or economic task either. The rehabilitation project has cost 4,5 million euros, 3 of them for rehabilitation, and has been run by the Andorran bank MoraBanc, owner of the house since 2014.

The municipal market of Sant Andreu closes the doors to face its remodeling. The twenty merchants will attend this Saturday to their clients in the historical enclosure and will reopen their blinds on Tuesday, November 7, but already in the provisional facilities that have been built in the Sant Adrià street, between the Segre and Otger streets. The work to reform the market will last 18 months.

As has already happened in other markets in Barcelona, such as Mercat del Ninot, once the old one has been reformed and works normally, the temporary one will be dismantled and the urban space will be restored as it was previously, as reported by the Barcelona City Council.

The technical and architectural team of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona is drafting the project of the new market of Sant Andreu, which is expected to open in the second half of 2019. It has had "special consideration" for the location of commercial equipment in Plaça del Mercadal. The first market roof of Sant Andreu dates from 1906 and, a few years later, in 1914, it was extended with another lower perimeter.

The future market will have less volume than the current one, something which will reduce the visual impact, both at the street level and from the surrounding buildings. In addition, municipal sources have explained that part of the perimeter will be glass. Once the remodeling tasks are completed, the building will have two floors.

On the ground floor, 1,240 square meters, will be installed 18 fresh produce stores, a waste management point and an information point. It will open a restaurant of 140 square meters as well. In the underground plant, of similar dimensions, some facilities will be located as well as the logistics space of the market (warehouses and cold storage) and another waste management point connected with that of the upper floor.

bad idea in my opinion, they should move the market to other terrain and liberate
the square..

they have a park at 2 blocks of distance, that is next to the huge park that they will build at sagrera... they shoudl build that new market there...

I agree with you up to a point, because it is true that the square would look better without the market. However, markets historically act as a key facility in all towns, and is normally built in the centre of the town. Considering Sant Andreu as a former town, it would make sense that the market remains in the same place. The citizens choose the market for its proximity and as a traditional way to buy goods, I don't think they would like to walk to another neighbourhood just to buy food
