Glòries welcomes its new neighbors

"I feel as if I won the lottery." This is how Noemi Isabel De Angelis expressed her joy after receiving the keys of what will become her home from today. She is one of the tenants who will open the new homes with services for seniors that have opened today in Carrer Ciutat de Granada, 145, next to Glòries Square.

Noemí explains that she has to "juggle" to pay the rent of the apartment where she currently lives, and that is why she defends that the sheltered housing for the elderly is "a very important project" that helps to have "a more just society".

In total, 117 people will live in these 105 newly built homes. Today they have collected their keys from the lieutenant of the mayor of Barcelona City Council Laia Ortiz, the housing councilor, Josep Maria Montaner, and representatives of neighborhood associations in the neighborhoods of the area.

22 buildings throughout Barcelona

In the sheltered homes for the elderly, various services are offered, such as cleaning, counseling, geriatric auxiliary therapies or telecare. Joint activities are also carried out and social support services are offered.

This sheltered rental housing has been created for people who are over 65 years old, can be worth themselves, receive pensions of less than 20,000 euros and do not have any property.

Counting the two buildings inaugurated today in the Ciutat de Granada street, the City Council of Barcelona currently has 22 residential buildings with services for elderly people throughout the city that welcome 1,385 people.

In addition, two new facilities of this type are being built in the neighborhoods of Sant Martí and Sarrià, which will add 73 new homes, and the construction of 193 more homes is planned in three developments to be built in Eixample and Gràcia.

The city block of the Cheap Houses of Bon Pastor will become a museum about the evolution of public housing in Barcelona

The houses will be restored according to four moments of its history: the original house of 1929, the post-war period in the 1950s, the remodeling of the 70's and the last inhabited house, from 2000 up to today. This action is part of the Neighbourhood Plan of the Bon Pastor and Baró de Viver, which promotes various programs for the recovery and diffusion of the historical memory of the neighbourhoods.

The set of Cases Barates (Cheap Houses) of Bon Pastor that is planned to be a museum is formed by 16 houses. Out of these, four will be rehabilitated for museum-house, another four for exhibition spaces, where it is planned to explain the history of housing in Barcelona, and the remaining eight will be equipped as public facilities and other ones of the museum space (meeting rooms, work spaces, classroom spaces and auditorium, archive, etc.).

The project takes the Työväenasuntomuseo in Helsinki as a good museum reference, a paradigmatic example in Europe of how to explain the daily life throughout the 20th century in a working class neighbourhood.

The set of Cheap Houses of Bon Pastor

Historically, the sector of the Cheap Houses was a set of houses located between the Besòs river and the streets of Mollerusa, Sèquia Madriguera and Sant Adrià. It is one of the four sets of cheap houses that the "Board of the Room", the actual Municipal Housing Board, built in Barcelona in 1929 to respond to the need of quick and economical accommodation for a large amount of population. This entity has preserved the property and has managed the houses under the protected rental regime until today.

European Medicines Agency: This monday, Barcelona gets out from doubts

This Monday it will be known what is the new headquarters of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which has to leave London due to the Brexit.

Of the 19 candidate cities, Barcelona is among the five favorites.

In favor, there is the fact that it already has a building practically ready: the Torre Agbar, now renamed Torre Glòries. Also, the great hotel offer. And yet another great argument: numerous biomedical research centers, large hospitals and influential scientists.

Around twenty Catalan scientists are on the list of the most influential in the world

Contrary to the candidature of Barcelona, there are the presence of up to three European agencies in Spanish territory. And also the political situation.

A team of technicians and politicians from the City Council, the Generalitat and the Spanish government have been working together for almost a year to achieve this.

Technical and objective demands

Discussion within the EU on future issues has been limited to the evaluation of "technical and objective" requirements. The European Commission has verified that the requirements have been fulfilled and left out of the formal debate the political context.

There are six specific criteria agreed upon by the 27 countries, which are like the guarantee that the agency will be able to assume its functions immediately after the Brexit in its new headquarters, or the good connections and the academic offer for the children of near 900 employees that will move with the EMA to their new destination.

It should also be valued that the chosen city ensures the continuity of EMA's activity, which takes into account the principle of "geographical dissemination" - the distribution of agencies between the different countries of the Union - and that it offers Adequate access to the labor market and to health care for displaced families.

Axa completes the purchase of Hotel Diagonal Mar and takes the 45% left for 70 million.

The real estate arm of the insurer, which already paid this summer to Iberdrola Inmobiliaria 80 million for 55% of the establishment, closes one of the largest operations in the sector in Spain.

Axa Real Estate does not rest and acquires 100% of the Hotel Diagonal Mar in Barcelona. The real estate arm of the French insurer has committed to pay 70 million euros to Iberdrola Inmobiliaria for 45% of the establishment to become its sole owner after paying 80 million in June of this year for the other 55%.

This agreement is positioned, just over a month before the end of the year, in the most important hotel sector in Barcelona, and one of the most important in Spain. This second payment would already have been pre-fixed by both parties since summer, when the first Axa investment in the asset materialized, according to the Economist.

The Hotel Diagonal Mar is a property intended for holiday and convention tourism, in the area of the same name, next to a shopping center of the same name that Deutsche Bank bought last year for 495 million. The establishment, four stars, is 400 meters from the beach, has 413 rooms and 20 suites, has a large room for a thousand guests and fifteen meeting rooms. It was built by Iberdrola, after reaching an agreement with the Hilton chain that has operated since then.
