I am revisiting this thread. It is only fair for me to list the 3 most beautiful cities that I have visited. This is certainly tough. In America there are far more beautiful cities than San Francisco and far more beautiful cities in Canada than Vancouver.

Rome, Paris and Barcelona made a huge impression on me in terms of beauty. So there you have it.

In the US and Canada just about any major northeastern city is gorgeous. I prefer the older cities for their beauty. Seattle and Chicago are the most beautiful new cities in this country. New Orleans is stunning too. Picking 3 is tough though. I realize that many folks glorify San Francisco and Vancouver as being the prom queens I am not one of them. They have proximity to nature which to me is beautiful. Beautiful yes...but not the most.

This guy I can relate to. Preconceived notions are ususally worthless.

"I have been so wanting to avoid this thread, but there is a two cents worth I want to add.

SF is a city that rests on its natural beauty laurels (the bay, the hills, the ocean, the Golden Gate, the views, the weather, etc.) This is true in particularly two areas: cleanliness and architecture.

It was a visit to Chicago a few years back that got me thinking about this. Having never been to or thought much about Chicago I did not have many preconceived notions. Boring big city, let’s go to Wrigley to watch a game and then go out for a steak dinner.

Instead, I was amazed by the spotlessness of just about everywhere I went (I was there for a week while the wife was at a conference), the lack of visible homelessness, and of course the (as I now know) the well known architectural splendor that is Chicago. Here is a place with essentially nothing going for it from a natural beauty perspective, and yet it was a wonderful place to visit. And in the tourist areas, safe too. We walked the Miracle Mile and out to the pier at 11pm at night and there was no thought whatsoever that we were in any kind of dodgy, scary place. (I know, all of Chicago is not like this, but everywhere I wanted to go to was.)

That got me thinking of what we have here in SF: trash everywhere, homeless folks everywhere, and generally boring architecture. Walk one or two blocks off of Union Square at night and things start going south in a hurry. And have a nice time dodging the drug dealers and crack hos on the way to the Orpheum or Warfield theaters after a nice meal at Original Joes (when it gets back in business). Nice . . .

There have been two instances in the last 70 years when great decisions were made that truly were successful attempts at beautifying the city: the building of the Golden Gate Bridge (a true great amongst man-made structures in every way) and the re-inventing of the Embarcadero in the wake of the 1989 quake. Other than that, not much of note.

It is a dirty city with tons of homeless and no cohesive centralized management or planning. Fantastic location and weather, but otherwise, not so good. (And don’t get me started on atrocities like the Rincon Hill development . . .)"

OK folks, be warned... the introductory period of the creditation rule is coming to an end.
If you don't want your photos to be deleted, tell us where they came from. Are they your own? Did you get them from Flickr, etc..? If you can specifically tell us, all the better.
