Rio and Buenos aires:Is in the same category as HK..there are some breathtaking areas but most part of the city is not that great.
there are also alot of ugly buildings in your fav cities, plus NY & sydney too - some of the more popular cities among forumers.

My 3 Fav:

1. Melbourne
2. Chicago
3. Hong Kong

Regarding cities i visited:

#1: New York (Still the most fascinating city in the world, in my humble opinion)
#2: London (my birthplace and a very huge city, with a lot of interesting places)
#3: Rome (I was there twice and i plan to go there again, because it is impossible to visit all interesting places in Rome in a few weeks.)

runner ups for me The City of Light:

runner up for me the City of lights

..and the winner, the city on two continents, 3000 years in the making

I give you ISTANBUL,
at street level (the most important level) its unsurpassed imo.
The most visually interesting streetscape and vibe at the mo:

For urban setpieces, it takes some beating:

In short, its not about how cool looking people are,
or x amount of beautiful people, clubs, bars or art galleries,
but the juxtapositions of the old and new, East and West, conservative and liberal.
Gay bars by ancient teahouses, mini skirts by mosques, headscarves in clubs, you name it
you got it.

NY might not be the most beautiful but it is THE BEST-at least for me who love cosmopolitan atmosphere, and for me to like a city it HAS to have a cosmopolitan atmosphere. And NY has it all.

Rio is beautiful with wonderful nature and culture but has big social problems, but anyway it is the city with the most gorgeously fit people. Just take a look on the beaches and nightlife, and a city with culture and carachter.

Paris is simply amazing-this one deserve THE most beautiful title!

Barcelona, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Rome, San Francisco, Sydney, Cape Town among others are high up there as well.
