Has anyone here

1.been to all of them
2. Got a genuinely balanced idea of what beauty is
3. not biased

No, but hey, as its probably impossible to create a definitive top 3 because of the subjectivity of beauty, the mood of the viewer, the weather, the marketing of the city.... Im going to also make a subjective list based on the cities I've been to.

1. New York (the mood of the place and the drama made me feel that it was beauty, like a rugged, handsome hollywood dandy from the 1950s)

2. Paris (I knew it was beautiful, objectively, agressively, stubbornly, like a severe, ageing woman, finely dressed but a total bitch to know)

3. York (a higgledy piggledy maze of small scale history with a beautiful cathedral in the middle. Beautiful for reasons of national pride, that such a city could survive in a country like the UK. This city is beautiful like a meadow, organic, very little planned grandeur, just a rambling timelessness)

Shit, I forgot Lisbon. Lisbon goes in at number 2 for me.... A living breathing historic city, buzzing with life, no sense of it being a museum. Visually astonishing, elegant, composed, cordinated and varied. A great personaility, sense of humour but still very elegant and classy

1.NY
2. Lisbon
3. Paris

[QUOTE=NYCboy1212;24550704]NYC is a beautiful city IMO

NYC, .. so beautifull in so many ways

anyway, typically a dutch bike. bended stear, 28 spokes the weel, a big lock around some pole on the street.... and a flat rear tyre

no doubt, I think the brand is a gazelle, I guess.

My numbers 1 and 2 would be Paris and Rome... But Istanbul also seems absolutely amazing! Sadly, unlike the other 2 cities, I haven't been to Istanbul yet, though it's so close. And it seems to be going through a very dynamic period from what I see and what I read. A 21st century cosmopolitan city incorporating its Ottoman and Graeco-Roman heritage....a city that never ceased to be important for 17 centuries now. Also, the only city in the world that sits on 2 continents. I would have many candidates for the 3rd part of the group, but, after looking at all these pics, I think Istanbul is one of the strongest candidates! Unique.

Istanbul is the most beautiful i think, Vancouver is the most livable(also beautiful) and NY is the best place to see a beautiful skyline. (Dubai may takeover NY in the future)

Thessaloniki certainly cannot be in the top 3, there is no question about it. Maybe in the top 30 or something.
But it's also certainly NOT a "dump with a few ancient ruins".
It does have many ancient ruins...it also has many buildings from the middle ages, as, during the times of the Byzantine Empire, it was second only to (then) Costantinople. It's still second only to Istanbul in the amount of Byzantine monuments surviving. Some buildings built during the Ottoman occupation also still exist, not only mosques but also eclectic private houses built around the turn of the century. Sadly many of them are gone.
In the 20th century, the fire of 1917 gave the opportunity for a large-scale restructuring of a central area, much like it was done in Paris by baron Haussmann, and so it acquired very wide streets lined with beautiful interbellum architecture.
Sure, it does have the ubiquitous modern apartment buildings that have sadly "watered down" the physiognomy of most cities of Greece after WWII. It's surely not a top -3 city. But it's no dump either...Check this out http://www.thessaloniki360.com/

check out pages 18 - 19 for Istanbul, some of the greatest hits. There is definitely something in the air when you get there, pure urban landscape.

The poor aswell as rich areas:

IMHO Sydney does not belong in the top 10. The 1 shot of SOH,SHB & Sydney harbour in the 1 photo is all it is....no way does it compare to the grand citys mentioned in this thread

SERIOUSLY are you ******* blind? you must be from serbia because noone else in the world would choose a city from serbia as one of the top 3, and you put 2 of them, wow your judgement is off, it is like you just picked 3 city names out of a hat
