Rio is like any other latin american nasty megalopolis, the only difference is its landscape but the city itself is horrible.

Latin cities are not nasty

BA, Santiago and Bogota are beautiful and amazing cities with huge cultural, artistic and intellectual institutions. Better planning and development than most North American and Asian cities. Of course they are not wealthy like more developed nations so they do have their larger bad parts.

Have not been to Mexico City maybe it is nasty.

Top 4 cities in terms of size, architecture street life and ambiance:

Paris, Buenos Aires, NYC and London.

Being a Westerner, Asian cities just do not seem to have the vibe that makes me appreciate them and enjoy them as much. But they are indeed fascinating.

I love New York a LOT....but it never even entered my realm of thoughts as I was thinking about which ones I'd choose when first opening this thread. And...for the love of God....if you want to really slam someone with the massive beauty of your city - SHORT AND SWEET. The hundreds of NYC pictures on the first page of this thread tooootally killed it for me. You can't show a picture of every damn building in town. You pick out 10 fantastic pictures that make people's mouth gape open and presto.

From places I've been, I would have to choose (in no particular order):

Stockholm
Barcelona
Paris
San Fran
Vancouver

I am probably one of the few SSC members who have been to all the cities listed so far in this Thread. Every city has beautiful parts. And every city I have been to has ugly parts, also. My 3 best for physical beauty are Rio, Capetown, and Sydney. However, Capetown cannot compare with NYC, BA, or Paris when it comes to the beauty of individual buildings. Paris has an homogenus look that is incomparable, and NYC has the most outstanding number of great buildings of different styles.
There are so many great cities in the World that I encourage everyone to visit them all.

I won't even try to pick a top 3, but I love these for very different reasons: Prague, Vancouver, New York.

Kilgarvan: agree about Istanbul.
