Buenos Aires is really the Latin America proud, I am saying this from Brazil where we have Rio as a famous city as well, but Buenos Aires is far more beautiful. More beautiful than some European cities, ex: Rome, London that in my opinion are ugly cities despite that the most beautiful cities in the world are in Europe.

RIO (for me, the best natural setting among the largest cities
in the world)

ROME and PARIS (beautiful cities in Europe)

RIO:

Panoramic view of Guanabara Bay

Panoramic view of the South Zone

Panoramic view of the Gávea Stone, largest stone by the sea in the world

Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Guanabara Bay, Beaches, Corcovado Montain

Beautiful natural setting

And, the Christ Statue

The natural seetings of San Francisco, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Istanbul are equally good in my opinion. Nevertheless the setting of Rio is surely among the most beautiful. And very nice shots, btw. Especially #1 and #3.

A list of CNN, considers the Guanabara Bay, one of the seven natural wonders of the world with others: Grand Canyon, USA; Great Barrier Reef, Australia; Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and China; Aurora borealis, in the polar region of the planet; Paricutín volcano, Mexico; and Victoria Falls (Victoria Falls), between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Unbelievable, I can't stop staring of that last shot of Corcovado Mountain (Christ Statue), Sugar Loaf and Guanabara Bay. I've always wanted to go Rio and this is pushing me closer to wanting to go.

Thanks for all the great photography, its truly a pleasure.

Rio is overrated. For a simple reason: While the natural setting is great, the urban center that blends with the setting is mediocre at best.

And while the natural setting has some relevance in defining if a city is beautiful and in what degree, it should only be a minor element. Never defining by itself if the city is beautiful or not. Rio the Janeiro, the city, is ugly.

I think Munich:
(no copyright available)
It has a beautiful substance of buildings and churches and an awesome Alps background!

OK! Munich is a beautiful city... as so as Paris and NY! But, Rio de Janeiro it's the most natural and green! A paradise!! This it's not because I'm a brazilian!! Verily.

Rio is not as green as many others. At least not from above. I don't know what it looks on street level. This would be good to see for a comparison...

I disagree about Berlin. Sure, it's not well preserved, its architecture is not homogeneous, it's not picture-perfect like Paris. But it's very very interesting! It's not an overall beautiful city, but it's a city with many beautiful spots with great architecture and, overall, one of the most interesting cities on Earth! That's my view, at least!

As for Rio, Ihaven't been there; maybe the architecture is mediocre. But a city is architecture + setting. And overall it looks impressive to me, at least from above! And I am pretty sure that living in one of those tall buildings by the sea must be awsome!

When the Portuguese royal family and most of the associated Lisbon nobles, fleeing from Napoleon's invasion of Portugal, moved to Rio de Janeiro. The kingdom's capital was transferred to the city, which, thus, became the only European capital outside of Europe. It left a legacy to the architecture of Rio. Rio is a candidate for Heritage of Humanity, for its mix of natural setting and historical architecture and modern architecture.

Downtown of Rio and Guanabara Bay

Castle (miniature) in the south zone

Castle in the northern

European architecture in the historic center

But, the biggest attraction of Rio, is its natural setting:

Looks like transport in Rio must be an absolute nightmare, are there tunnels under the bay?

I have read this once but did no more research on that because I thought it was a joke. So Brazil was the only country with a colony in Europe! I can imagine Portuguese don't like that fact!

The city is cut by mountains, lakes, forests (the 2 largest urban forests in the world). The transport system uses tunnels, subways and roads suspended between the sea and the mountains.

The Rio-Niterói bridge, 7th largest in the world in extension
and the largest in the world in volume space (constructed area), is the bridge of Guanabara Bay:

Tunnels and avenues on the rocks and the sea, are part of the transport system:
