This is done in every construction site in Dubai, even on those distant from the coast line.
But I mean this. Short after the collapse of the wall near the water (when the site flooded) all the water was pumped out, but you could clearly see water coming in from the bottom.

Burj Dubai one was 3.7 meters thick, however the thickness of the raft has more to do with adding weight and in the case of Infinity the weight is needed to counter the pressure that the ground water table applies from beneath.

Foundation collapse

I am not an engineer but I understand the principles behind building retaining walls or dams to hold back the water. The water pressure is always greater at the bottom. Therefore the retaining wall must be larger at the bottom than the top. Looks like someone forgot that in the calculation for the foundation. The important thing here was every worker was safely evacuated before the wall collapsed. On a lighter side the owners could always put the swimming pool in the basement. I certainly would want to park my car down there!

It's called Infinity Tower, because the tower turns around and when you stand at the bottom of it and you look up, it seems that the tower keeps spinning around: it's infinity

And also because of the time its taking to build (Infinity = time). Tragically they landed up in huge mess with the water flooding into the site, never the less, they have fought their way now…..
