ill post that last comment here then =P:

there actually is some truth behind crawf's arguments it may surprise you.

my sister's friend was involved with the building of many of the highrises at docklands and worked closely with some of the architects, planners and designers also. he told us that many corners were cut, and these buildings were built so poorly and so quickly that they wont last very long before they start to crack, and will possibly need to be renovated within 25years.

from an design point of view, some of these buildings are quite stunning and modern in appearence, but as for structurally, as many people have already said, time will tell

anyway, stop arguing, what does it achieve? im sure crawf never meant to have a go at melb./docklands

why you ask??
well because SA has over $20 billion worth of projects in the pipeline such as the $7 billion Urainum Olympic Dam Expansion and the $6 billion Air warfare Contract (won over vic, hehe) and many more mining and defence projects.

btw Australia has 30% of the last remaining urainum in the world - the bulk of it is in SA
I may be way off, but it sounds like you have a little chip on your shoulder...

haha, after saying that I remembered Melbourne was predicted to turn into a ghosttown in the 70's, but look it now it has
- a growing population
- one of the Worlds best Stadiums (love that place)
- A Fantastic Lively City Centre and beachside suburb (St Kilda)
- Oceania's Best Casino (love that place also )
and last but not least Melbourne has Australia's MOST impressive skyline (better than Sydneys )

so saying all that - Queensland and WA's population boom could end very soon, because you can NOT predict the future!!

i think it's called the Southern Star. (thats why its shaped like a star). Anrd does any one know when construction starts? They should make it 15metres taller so it's the tallest in the world

No, nobody knows when construction starts. As a matter of fact, nobody has any other information on any project than what's already been posted in the forums. And because no one knows, don't expect anyone to start knowing in two days' time.

You can trust the people here to post news as soon as it arrives, but that requires some sort of information to actually be present.

Sods turned, pods coming
Jen Kelly
12jul06
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/com...5E2862,00.html

MELBOURNE'S giant 120m ferris wheel is on its way after the first sod was turned at its Docklands site yesterday.

But the delay-plagued wheel now won't be completed before late 2008 or early 2009, its developer admitted yesterday.
The company's new boss revealed the cost had soared to about $120 million, double the $60 million consistently claimed by the firm for more than a year.

ING Real Estate's new general manager, Greg Boyd, said the Southern Cross Observation Wheel would be finished in 2008 only if contracts could be awarded in the next couple of months.

A 30-minute ride in one of 21 air-conditioned, glass-enclosed pods, with views across Melbourne, will cost about $25.

Site work began yesterday on the second stage of Waterfront City, a $1 billion, 19ha development at Docklands that includes restaurants, shops, housing and the giant wheel. But work on site for the wheel is unlikely to begin until early next year: the construction contract is expected to be awarded by Christmas at the latest.

The first of the passenger pods was completed months ago in a factory in Osaka, Japan.

It is hoped the wheel will become Melbourne's equivalent to the popular London Eye.

"It's going to be fantastic," Mr Boyd said.

Waterfront City information centre manager Aliya Jeka said tourists who saw the model of the wheel were usually impressed.

"I can't wait to go on it."

The southern star wheel will reach "nearly" 120m high. this means the top Rl is probably 120m thus maybe 117m above actual ground. the current tallest is london eye at 135m. Currently UC is the Singapore flyer will reach 169m in 2008.The Cihai wheel UC in Tianjin,China will be 140m.

and of course the 182m wheel in Dubai is set to start soon maybe?

Melbournes wheel will be maybe worlds 10th tallest in 2009?

Are we liking the design of the wheel or the wheel itself? I don't see much of this in relation to its potential existence! Does Melbourne really need this?

OR

Are we happy with it? or simply given into the fact that it will happen so no need to go down that path?

i think its not ugly. its definately creates something interesting on skyline.
i dont see this as a bad move.should look cool when completed. snaps will be great from up there. really dif vantage point of the city.30mins trip? thats an ideal time. the london eye is apparently 1hr. maybe bit long?

I can see it being levelled within 10 if not 5 years. Feel free to quote me in 5-10 years if I'm wrong. I really do hate that wheel, a nice park it will make.

I like the design of the southern star but trust Dubai to build something taller (if it goes ahead)!!! I went on the London Eye when I was there. I thought it went for like 40 minutes not an hour. I might be wrong.

Not really the same. Correct me if i'm wrong but Adelaide is the 5th largest city in Oz out of 8. Not really the majorist city. Sorry if iv'e brought up an argument. Not that I care how big a city is. As long as it's liveable and all cities in Oz always perform well.
