Even though I like the design I cannot see how ING will ever get back their $120 million investment.
London for starters gets 30 or 40 million tourists every year compare that to Melbournes couple of million.
Even at 5% interest on $120 thats $6 million alone = 240,000 at $25 or over 650 trips x 365 days a year and that dosent take into account a profit and running costs.

I wouldnt be surprised if ING pull out of the project before much is built.
Just another "never done" Melbourne project coming up..

The wheel is simply not feasible and is wrong for this location.
It should be moved to St Kilda, and built on the car park next to the Palais (great views all around and will become part of the amusement park precinct).
If it is ever built at Waterfront City, it would become Melbourne's third observation deck of sorts, and the views from this location are not the greatest (Coode Island, etc).
At $25 dollars a pop, you can count me out already.

Cul, you think anything tall is worth building, but it ain't. The London Eye is a half hour "flight" but an extra hour long wait in the freezing cold. 1 hour and you'd have people jumping out due to boredom. It was (for me) an UTTER WASTE OF (A LOT OF) MONEY. Biggest tourist rip-off in all of London (but then again, I didn't have time to visit the London Dungeons).

As with everyone else, Blabby HATES the wheel for Melbourne. It's just not right. Not right, I tells yer. Cliched, half arsed, tacky, wrong location, etc etc. It's all been said before.

Well Los Angeles has about 3x the population of Melbourne. Melbourne has about 3x the population of Adelaide. If Los Angeles is a major city while Melbourne is just a city, what does that make Adelaide? A town?

From The Age today:

The multi-million dollar feature film Where the Wild Things Are is to be shot in Melbourne in a major boost for the state's film production industry.

Directed by Oscar-nominated Spike Jonze and featuring the voices of Hollywood stars Benicio Del Toro and Michelle Williams, the shoot will take place on use two sound stages at Melbourne Central City studios in the Docklands and at locations in regional Victoria.

Announcing the coup at Federation Squaretoday, Victorian Treasurer John Brumby said the film was expected to bring up to $30 million to the state.

In further good news for the local industry, the Australian Film Institute has committed to holding its annual AFI Awards in Melbourne until at least its 50th anniversary celebration in 2008.

This year's AFI Awards will take place on December 6 and 7.

Good news for Melbournes film industry No doubt Brumby is working hard to make the CC Studios work.

what docklands needs is a really good night life section with cool funky bars right on the water etc

in auckland NZ, they have this new section on the water called the viaduct - and its awesome ! heaps of bars, pubs, restaurants, cafe's.

i know new quay has restaurants, but you need some pubs and bars down there too to attract more people.

cheers

yes very true lozza, they have them, but they are away from the water, and not bunched up, there is a section passed dock 5 which has a few in a bunch, then there are more further along, waterfront city has a couple, but they are right back from the water not facing the right way (towards the CBD with a great view!)
