Norway Postpones Train Testing After Derailment

Norway's state railroads says it has suspended testing of a new Swiss-made train after five people were injured when it derailed and slammed into a mountainside during a test run.

Norwegian State Railways spokesman Haakon Myhre says five people — three Norwegians, one Swiss and one Finn — were on the board when it went off the tracks some 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of Oslo.

Myhre said officials have decided to postpone testing the FLIRT (Fast Light Innovative Regional Train) until the cause of Wednesday's accident has been established.

In 2009, NSB railways bought 50 train sets from Switzerland's Stadler Rail AG. The first 10 sets were delivered in 2011, and the trains were scheduled to start rolling out later this month.

An old dream for many people in Norway seems to get closer to a reality these days. To be able to travel by car from Krstiansand in south to Trondheim along the west-coast without ferries. This means building some of the biggest and most spectaculare bridges and underwater tunnels in the world.

See the video!

Snabbtåg på pelare mellan Köpenhamn och Oslo

Quote:

Time to update the list in the first post? ping Svartmetall
I'm thinking a list where it's e.g.:
Sweden:
-rail
-motorways
-Stockholm transit on the local forum
-Stockholm transit on the global forum

...and so forth. What say you?

Here's some to be copied in:

Our railway-threads in the international forums:
Sweden thread on the global Railways forum
Denmark thread on the global Railways forum
Norway thread on the global Railways forum
Norway HSR thread on the global Railways forum
Finland thread on the global Railways forum
Estonia thread on the global Railways forum
Latvia thread on the global Railways forum
Malmö-Stralsund Rail Tunnel thread on the global Railways forum
Finland-Estonia HSR Link thread on the global Railways forum

OMG, that's sum hardcore stuff (genre being engineer and architecture porn)! Suspension bridge with 450m high pylons would be mindblowing.

How likely is this giant go get actually built before say, 2050? Are traffic flows really that big over there? Iirc Pont du Millau needs quite a few decades to finance itself by tolls and that's connecting Spain and France after all.

Edit: Another note:

Ouch, thank god it's just a propaganda movie. I really like the idea of linking major cities with HSR, but other than that the video was quite horrifying and dystopical. "One big global market in which only the very biggest and most competitive Mega Regions could do" and whatnot. Reminds me off Mega City One in Judge Dredd:

Imho,it would also make sense to add links to Estonian and Latvian railways thread in local forums on N&B. Both have far better coverage of projects & news than threads on global Railways forum.

Anyway, short summary of stuff going on in Estonia at the moment:
  • Czech company Elektrizace železnic Praha a.s. (in this project they work on overhead lines & electric equipment) & Leonhard Weiss RTE (in this project they work on railways reconstruction) are finishing Westbound electric railways overhaul in Estonia. This covers about half of existing electric railways in Estonia. Not much, considering that we only have 130+ km of electrified tracks, but still vast improvement.
  • Leonhard Weiss RTE is also finishing reconstruction of stations. Old station platforms with variable height have been replaced with new standardized 550mm height platforms. Somewhere around 130 stations have been rebuilt so far. Can't remember exact date, but project should end in 2014-2015,when last remaining stations in Eastern Estonia get new platforms.

    Typical new station:

    Tondi station.
There's a good news for Tondi station users - they are finally adding ramp to Western platform. This means that mothers with baby carriages, cyclists & handicapped persons can finally use that side of Tondi street,as previously crossing the tracks meant climbing the stairs. Definitely not an option if you're using wheelchair, for example. It's quite remarkable that stairs were built there during previous Tondi street railway crossing reconstruction (not the last year's one,but before that) without ramp.

  • New passenger trains testing is under way. For those who don't know about it - Estonia bought 20 diesel-electric and 18 electric Stadler Flirts. About 5 or 6 trains are in Estonia at the moment being tested. In summer all our old electric trains will be replaced with new ones. Diesel trains will be replaced in early next year. All new trains will be operated by company called Elektriraudtee.

  • EVR Cargo, subsidiary of national railway company Eesti Raudtee,is testing new DF7G-E "shunters" (it would be more accurate to call them main line freight locomotives with shunting capability) produced by China CNR Corporation Limited. It's cosidered controversial deal by many people, but if testing succeeds, then EVR Cargo gets 16 Chinese produced locomotives.

Video of DF7G-E being transported to Tallinn.

  • Rail Baltica's (international rail link from Berlin to Tallinn) real planning process is starting soon. Political will is there and it's getting more & more likely that 10 years from today it will be U/C. There are various work plans, but most likely scenario will have electrified double track railway with 220km/h top speeds running from Lithuanian border to Larvian capital Riga and then onward all the way up to North, to Tallinn. Already existing railways in Poland on Rail Baltica route will get extensive upgrades.

Yeah, the goal would be to have links to all the infrastructure threads on both the global and local forums.

Yeah, I re-named a few threads in the compilation. I know the obvious reasons not to do so, but I think making sure the links have descriptive names makes for a more useful list.

No problem at all, whatever makes it easy to find a thread on a particular topic is good.

But it kind of consigns you to do the merging as it would be hard for others to check their list against the existing one.

The new E39 is supposed to be finished within 20 years, meaning 7(?) major fjord-crossings. However, this particular crossing is so difficult so it may take some years extra.. But I think its safe to say that it will be finished before 2050.
