The render of the project, from that site, is already posted!

Anyway...

................................................

Ahmdedabad to have a Rotating Steel Qutub Minar

Quote:
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is all set to gift a modern-day landmark to the city in form of a moving tower. The civic body has decided to erect a 25.2 metre-tall stainless steel tower with six blocks, each of which will rotate at 15 degree. The contract for this Rs5.25 crore project has already been given, but the location to house the exquisite tower is yet to be finalised.

The blocks will be constructed in a way so that they can move freely on a rotational axis to change the shape of the tower according to the different angles of rotation of each block.

The tower will have six structural blocks with stainless steel cladding and will use thrust bearings to transmit loads and robotic movements between adjacent blocks. The tower will also change colours with the help of exclusive software.

The civic body is looking for a huge space for the tower to accommodate a large number of people wanting to enjoy the experience in the city's moving Qutub Minar.

The Kankaria Lake Front is too busy a place and has been attracting a good number of people anyway, so the civic body is exploring the possibilities of setting up this modern-day landmark in areas such as Sabarmati River Front and Science City, said a source in the AMC.

City-based National Institute of Design (NID) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, have worked on the details of this project and had submitted a feasibility report to the civic body. The civic body has allotted the contract for the project to Oriental Manufacturers.

The design of the tower bears an influence of the world-famous Qutub Minar, Ashok Stambh (pillar) and some of India's ancient temples, but it still has a uniqueness of its own.

Asit Vora, chairman of the AMC's standing committee, said that the municipal commissioner has been asked to shortlist places where this moving tower can come up. "The final decision will be taken once the municipal commissioner is back from his leave," he said.

The project will take around six to eight months for completion from the date of commencement. Since the design of the tower is unique and one of its kind in the city, it is expected to attract a large number of tourists to the city.

Would it be better to have an Ahmedabad discussions thread (like Hyd, Bom etc.) and keep this thread for project pics?

Until we have a seperate thread for discussion, I'm continuing it in here... sorry abt that...

My question is - Do we really need such a huge malls? Let me first say that I'm not a conservative person... I've got a good international exposure and been to few countries like s'pore, usa & canada for a long period of time (thanks to wipro)...

Here are MY thoughts why WE people in india don't need malls. Malls are needed when there are some reasons like below:

1. There are less people available for employment (less population)
2. Local Economy is based on consumer spending
3. Higher level of Per capita income of the people
4. Availability of good infrastucture like proper electricity, proper water, good sewage system etc.
5. Local weather goes severe (like winter in USA/Canada, summer in Gulf countires)

So let's not encourage the idea of having a large/huge malls. They are also not environment friendly. Though we don't really need mall, we are going to have them more and more because we have a class in our society which has enough to afford such luxury and we have another class in our same society which can do anything just to show that it can afford such luxury.

Anyway, I think Ahmedabad is in early stages of "MALL" culture. Still people are not pronouncing the word "MALL" properly... By the time all the people of ahmedabad start pronouncing the word "MALL" properly, we will definately have some proper malls... till that time, let's enjoy price negotiations in "EMPORIUM"s/"BHANDAR"s etc...

Hey Shreyas,

Was just thinking, since this thread already includes everything... wouldnt it be easier to use the new thread solely for projects/pics?

New thread is pretty much empty right now, so just needs one of the mods to change the title.

Would just need a few X-Posts from this thread to give a summary of whats going on already, otherwise the projects that are already in this thread might get overlooked/lost

What do you reckon?

Cool...

My suggestion would be:

Change the title of this thread to

"Ahmedabad Development News and Discussions"

Change the title of other thread to

"Ahmedabad Projects"

and just xpost some project pics from this thread into the new one

Now that there seem to be more Amdavadi/Gujarati forum members who have their own views to share, it would probably be good to have seperate threads

This way, people who just casually browse the forum who are mainly interested in construction will have an easier job finding project pics, kinda like a showcase gallery almost.

Whereas this thread can continue to be where development/investment news articles are posted, along with Amdavad-centric discussions.

But obviously, lets leave the floor open for everyone else to have their say.

As the present plan stands, the 20-per cent of land reserved for commercial development has perfect pre-decided geometrical plot shapes that would define the shape of building coming on them and each shape has been assigned the number of floors to go with it. This is the new skyline of the riverfront. Shapes varying from a circle, square, rhombus, quadrilateral and a variety of geometrical forms line the riverfront. These shapes form the building footprint on the riverfront. The saleable built-up area is calculated as a multiple of the area of the footprint and the number of floors assigned to each of the plot shape. The concept of margin space would be completely eliminated from the design as there would be no compound walls encircling the buildings — mainly to save on public space. The owner of a building would have slot for parking within the premises and there would be public parking spaces also. “Our emphasis is on public space. We have reserved 20 per cent of reclaimed land for sale. If costs are recovered by selling building space within 16 per cent of the land, then the rest of the four per cent would be used as public space,” said a senior official of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL). Once finalised, the shapes and saleable built-up area would be thrown open for investors for discussions and suggestions. A separate development control regulation has been drafted by SRFDCL and is pending approval from the state urban development department. In Wednesday’s SRFDCL board meeting, the committee sanctioned two roads — a sixlane 30-m-wide road which is the ‘East River Drive’, while a four-lane 24-m-wide road, called the ‘West River Drive’. Civil utilities like drainage, electric lines, water and storm water drain utilities would be laid along side road. For now, the roads would extend from Dafnala to Sardar bridge on the east side and from Paldi to Usmanpura on the west side. Pedestrians would have direct access to the river on both banks, while on a small stretch on the eastern side the road will move away from the river because of the unusual topography. Nearly 42.8 hectares of parks and gardens have been envisaged along the river edge to host different recreational functions.

Hmm interesting. Do you have any stats on the highest building possible taking into consideration the dimensions of a plot?

Narendra Modi visits Sabarmati Rivefront

Quote:
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi spent two hours at Sabarmati Riverfront project site today morning in a surprise visit. Two cabinet ministers including Urban development minister Nitin Patel, Mayor Kanaji Thakor, Municipal Corporation Standing Committee Chairman, Municipal Commissioner, Architect Bimal Shah, Deputy Municipal Commissioner and incharge of the project Captain Mahajan were present during Chief Minister’s visit.

The Chief Minister visited 10.5 km walk-way on both sides of river Sabarmati between Subhash bridge to Vasna. He observed Diaphragm-wall and Retaining wall works that are completed and also watched Earth filing work in progress.

Chief Minister directed the officials to prepare a presentation on the site so that the engineering students can visit the site and get knowledge about state-of-the-art engineering techniques being used in the project. He also directed to depict glimpses of Gujarat’s cultural heritage on the bridge-pillars and retaining wall
.

He directed the Municipal authority to plant one tree at every 20 ft distance on both sides of the river along the riverfront.

Rs 702 crore works under Rs 1182 crore Sabarmati Riverfront project are undergoing presently. Of this Rs 587 crores are spent. Hudco has recently aproved Rs 350 crore loan for the project.

[QUOTE=GJ10;46452643]Narendra Modi visits Sabarmati Rivefront

Its great that Modi is taking interest and visiting sites. The directions he gave are really good (especially the presentation one where students can learn) and he certainly sounds creative with suggestion of heritage glimpses on pillars....however, I’m baffled about something....since when does an official decide on art and landscaping? Where are the architects? I guess my point is, how can he not know about all the plans? And how can you just change them on a whim just because a CM suggests it?

Don’t get me wrong, I like what he suggested and think that they should be implemented. However, aren’t there procedures to change things on a project?

There are pre-existing plans, very extensive ones at that. Modi is also well aware of them... (see below)

Given that this is a Govt of Gujarat project, it makes sense that they should have an input on its look. None of the renderings released previously have ever shown anything to be on the Walls, so its possible that from a design point of view they had been left as a blank canvas until being built.

Its better that politicians only get involved with the superficial aspects of projects, such as what should be depicted on the walls, rather than anything technical that is probably beyond their understanding.

If Modi had turned up and started talking at this stage about building extra bridges or using different construction materials... then it would be something to worry about!

There is a piece in the "International Review of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design" on the Sabarmati Rivefront Project

It is a good summary for anyone not familiar with the project from the outset. The pic below is one that I dont think has been posted before... (and I think looks quite cool!)

The other main point that I dont think have been mentioned before is that the area between Gandhi and Nehru Bridges is going to be developed as a CBD (the majority of the area seen in the pic above)
