Bansko/Borovetz | Банско/Боровец

BANSKO

Situated on the West slopes of the amazingly beautiful Pirin Mountain, Bansko is a unique mix of a well preserved historical village from the XVIII-XIX c. and a modern resort base. Its popularity grows with every year and from what I hear it's already outpacing the more famous in the past Borovets. Pirin itself is a state protected natural park. The distance from Sofia is 160 km to the South.

Bansko was founded during the X c. on the site of an old Thracian settlement. During the XVIII c. it was a prosperous place, home to craftsmen, artists and merchants. Its highly regarded icon painting and woodworking schools were among the most influential in the country.

Today, Bansko is "one of the jewels in Bulgaria's tourism crown". The skiing conditions are excellent. The slopes offer runs and tracks for all types of skiers, from the novice to the expert. The town itself attracts visitors by its 120 cultural monuments, its museum-houses and the permanent ethnographic and icon painting exhibitions. A very interesting sight is the Holy Trinity Church with its 30m high bell tower and clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings. The region is famous for its cuisine and colourful folklore and offers various entertainment opportunities.

From Sofia, public transportation is available, departing from the Ovcha Koupel station in the suburb of Knyazhevo five times a day (5 hrs, $2). Private companies, such as Trans 5 depart from behind the Princess Hotel near the Sofia Central Railway Station (3 hrs $3). During the winter, Sofia tour operators offer multi-day ski trips that include transportation.

BOROVETZ

Borovets is on the North slopes of the Rila Mountain at 1,350 m of altitude. It is located at the foot of Mount Moussala. Borovets is easily accessible. It is only 73 km from Sofia and 126 km from Plovdiv.

Borovetz is the closest to the capital Sofia of the 3 big resorts. It was developed as a recreational base mainly for hunting during the end of the XIX c. and the beginning of the XX c. Our Tsars had a winter palace there. Today Borovets is a modern ski resort of high class and luxury hotels, haute-cuisine restaurants and varied leisure-time entertainment opportunities besides an excellent network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the Rila Mountain. The resort provides excellent opportunities for the whole range of winter sports -- from the Alpine sports to cross-country skiing, ski-jumps and biathlon. The resort has twice hosted Word Cup Alpine skiing rounds, while its biathlon track is one of the best in the word. The slopes of Borovets have a permanent snow cover, more than a meter and a half thick, from November to May. The air in Borovets is crystal-clear and totally free of any pollutants.

Borovets offers scores of scenic routes, including many ski-routes, in groups led by experienced guides. The organized trips lead to picturesque spots in the Rila Mountain, like the Seven Rila Lakes, Mount Malyovitsa or Mount Moussala. A photo safari and a visit to the Bulgarian Tsars residence of Bistritsa or to the Rila Monastery form the X c. are also regularly organized.

Sofia (Bansko and Borovetz) are in between the 7 candidate cities left for the 2014 Winter Olympics bid, the elected host city will be announced on July 7, 2007.

If Sofia actually does get elected, it will stimulate the whole winter tourist business...

What is your opinion on the subject, and do you think that there should be more restrictions on building in those areas?

I even read somewhere that some Austrian businessman is interested to build a Casino in Bansko. It looks like there is potential in this business sector, but let's not let it go crazy like happened on the Black Sea Coast, where people started constructing randomly everywhere.

Pictures to come...

I was at Borovetz just two weeks ago and what amazing natural beauty..

BG Patriot, your pics from the Tsar's lodge didn't come out for me. Here's a few I took from the outside..

On a side note, they're building like crazy throughout the whole area; I hope they don't overdo it.

you are right. They are building like crazy and wonder what impact this will have on the lift que this winter season... All the talk about a second gondola but nothing up until now that is reliable enough to post here.

There also seems to be a water supply problem where new apts have no water to flush toilet.. WTF?

Yes. The construction boom there is unparalleled, but this is what happens when you have the type of raw, uncontrolled capitalism, which Bulgaria has. Things will backfire and people will loose money bacause they are making an effort at it collectively. Too bad you can't bring nature back, once it's been destroyed.

[QUOTE=minime;10218002]raw capitalism... Makes it almost sound like a dirty word. [QUOTE]

And yes, it is a dirty word. Even America has shifted away from it in the last 100 years.

Bg Patriot, some correction, Borovets is not on the foot of Msalla mountain, the Musalla massiv itself donīt start there, it starts at a high about 2300 m, it is close to the Musala peak but from Borovets you canīt see any peak, i find the position of Borovets really bad as you see bad sides of the mountain, just 3 km to the right of borovets there is a deep valley with very steep slopes etc and there are other positions for ski in the rila mountain, i hope when they start to make Super borovets project that they will include the village of Iskar so tourists will automatically see the Iskar valley from distance and will want to go there, High in the Iskar valley there is a big artificial lake and the scenerie is pretty beautiful there. A good side is that they will improve infrastructure, especially roads, they are recostructing the road from simitli to bansko, much of it is finished, the Predel section will be very interesting with the new road and the new bridges. The markings they used on that road are bad though and in one year the ywill need to make new markings as you already can se how they dissapear at some places. they will also continue the Struma motorway and thatīs a very good thing. they might build a motorway Dupnica, Samokov, Trakya motorway connection, i hope they will do it.

To Bansko, i also like to visit this town but i like the sight from Raslog more, i also think people are more openminded in Raslog and Raslog looks way modern to Bansko, Raslog has very nice Roundabouts, and the centre of Raslog is way better and more modern and very clean. From Raslog you can see the steepest parts of Pirin mountain, the peaks Banski Suhodol and Bajuvi Dupki and the peak Kamenitica which are interesting and difficult to climb, altough Pirin mountain isnīt as extreme as Rila the ski slopes have better sights than the ones in Rila. With a cabinelift you go up to about 1700 m and can continue going up to about 2450 m and ski down, there are many pists in many categories, AFAIK the most difficult is Tomba, hard one.

You can enjoy such sights when you decide to go to Bansko and go in the mountains, i donīt know if the cabine is working on summer/spring though.
