RAK base for largest film centre in Middle East

Ras Al Khaimah: Ras Al Khaimah is set to become one of the largest film production centres in the Middle East with the Hollywood film city project being set up in the emirate.

The RAK Media City has attracted around $1 billion (about Dh3.67 billion) film city project from Hollywood, US.

"Mirage Holdings FZCO has been licenced to operate the entire Film and Media City. To our knowledge, we are the first foreign, private company to be granted permission to operate a Free Zone of such large dimensions," said Michelle Nickelson, the CEO of Mirage Holding.

Mirage Holdings FZCO boasts of a crew that has won back-to-back Oscars for special effects in Matrix and What Dreams May Come.

Michelle Nickelson the CEO of the venture said: "Visual effects are becoming extremely expensive, with several $200 million plus budget films coming out this year.

"The biggest cost is not the stars, it is the effects. By being able to fabricate visual effects in RAK using top designers in the US, everyone wins. In addition, the business climate in RAK is in favour.

"Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of RAK, graduated from MIT and is very business oriented and has a clear vision for the growth of RAK. We are looking to grow an entertainment industry that provides a service at a better price to the US and other markets, including India."

The Mirage Film City will feature an International Film Museum to archive films and various aspects of film making since motion pictures at 24 frames per second was first commercially started.

This is expected to be a tourist attraction.

A Film Institute is also on the anvil, which will promote local talent and create a platform for them to address the global market.

The courses will have the best of the East and the West in terms of filming styles. This is expected to open up a new avenue of employment for highly-qualified professionals.

Mirage is also planning to conduct an International Film Festival in RAK. This is expected to bring together the best of World Talent with special focus on special effects, computer animation and graphics apart from the mainline cinema.

Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of RAK, had predicted in the World Bank Investor Conference that RAK was on a tipping point from where growth would be exponential and unstoppable. His words seem prophetic now and he has made it happen.

this is very strange... in dubailand film city thread it said this "mirage" studio is opening a big studio in dubai studio city......... r they moving to ras al khaimah?
