NYC: Goldman Sachs Global HQ - 226M/742FT

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony at the end of last year to announce that it has commenced construction of its new world headquarters in Lower Manhattan. The building is intended to serve as the firm's world headquarters, housing investment banking, investment management, and trading operations. Initial occupancy is scheduled for 2009.

This new tower is state-of-the-art and is being built across the street from Freedom Tower. It will cost US$1.8 billion and will have about two million square feet of space.

Here's a picture of construction from today from the WTC cam. I'm not sure of which stage of construction they're at.

It looks like they are drilling anchor footings for the foundation. Glad to see this getting underway finally. Now if only they'd actually start on the project kiddycorner across the street.

I think the design is typically I.M. Pei ok, just need a better angle of the rendering.

I'm glad to see more buildings going up in NYC but when are we gonna get some 1200ft+ buildings in NYC?

The rendering doesn't look that great but like most buildings I've seen the real thing looks a whole lot better than the rendering.

being only 40 floors, 742 feet, and of pedestrian design, why is this building so expensive? we know there will be state of the art features, but still!

I agree, it needs to be both taller, preferably in the 900-1000ft range, with a better design, like more stainless steel or accented with something.

For some reason, the most interesting facade (i.e., the west facade) is never shown in the renderings. It has a curved facade that looks amazing.

Also, unlike residents of other US cities, New Yorkers adamantly oppose mega-tall buildings.
