They're planning on re cladding FCP (Bank of Montreal). If they choose something similar to Bay-Adelaide, they're going to look like twins.

A hot corner in for more change
2 May 2009
National Post

At 1:30 p. m. yesterday, two workers in reflective orange vests and blue Ellis Don hard hats began breaking up the sidewalk at the northeast corner of Bay and Adelaide streets, using a jackhammer.

The sidewalk has had a good life; a stamp on one piece reads, "CITY -- 1957." Crews are replacing the lowly cement with grey granite, to befit the long-delayed arrival of the Bay Adelaide Centre, at 333 Bay St.

While the work is underway, a three-metre fence in blue steel blocks the sidewalk, directing people to walk on Bay Street, which retains one lane for cars northbound.

Controlled chaos has reigned here for some time. With workers from Lewis Build pouring cement for the fourth storey of the Trump Tower on the southeast corner, and Ellis Don putting up the 51-storey Bay Adelaide tower across the way, Adelaide has for several years now squeezed from four lanes to two east of Bay Street, and has had no north sidewalk for a long time.

One could say that this is a hot corner of Toronto. The downside of being hot: It is in a continual state of transformation. In the morning I swung by the City of Toronto's wonderful archives on Spadina Road, where binders and directories and microfilm and old maps tell the story: nothing lasts on this site. If Bay-Adelaide lasts 30 years here, it will be a record.

In 1880 the Zion Church stood on the corner. North of it was a laundry, and, to its north, Fire Station No. 1 on the corner of Temperance Street.

By 1903 the church was gone, and the corner held I. N. Cassidy Cigars, the American News Agency, Seven Sutherland Sisters hair tonic, Lee Collins Co. stencils, and the American Pressing Co. Only the firehall survived.

Along Adelaide crowded a lab, a bar supplier, a corset-maker, a printer and a stationers' store. A photo from the period shows streetcar tracks on both Adelaide and Bay, slicing through the mud. One can imagine the scene: The air hangs heavy with horse droppings and cigar smoke. Streetcar wheels squeal, women lift their skirts to skip over puddles, newsboys hawk papers and men swill cheap whisky in noisy bars.

(Ads in the 1903 phone book exhort readers to buy "the Very Best Rogers Coal" and, for pure Lake Simcoe ice, "Try the Lake Simcoe Ice Supply Co.")

The Farmers Bank of Canada bought the corner and built a bank, but it went bust in 1910. By 1923 its premises had been filled by a tobacconist, shoemaker, watchmaker, a shoestore and -- my favourite-- Longbottom Tailors.

It's hard to imagine that tumult today. Downtown Toronto has traded street theatre for a quieter, cleaner world underground. Under Scotia Plaza you find action: a man shining shoes, shoppers, cafes. A sign beside Winners promises, "A New PATH Coming Soon: September 2009." That tunnel will connect to Bay-Adelaide.

Still, lots of people walked on Bay Street skirting the construction site yesterday, carrying bags from The Bay, Aeropostale and Abercrombie. A couple of women, touristing from China, stopped to ask me the way to the CN Tower. One carried a parasol.

Compared to what's been on this corner before, the Bay-Adelaide Centre is a behemoth. The builders left an 11-storey stone and yellow-brick facade of the Herbert House office building, which now forms the northwest corner of the new tower. Two gryphons carved in stone guard the front door. It is a scrap of history, dwarfed by a cliff of glass.

Workers are scheduled to complete the granite sidewalks here on Monday, May 11, at 7 p. m. I look forward to the day. The area's long-suffering pedestrians deserve a nice place to walk.
