yeh and the SA open next year is sponsered by SAA and is the precurser to the event reaching atp status instead of the challenger status. for the event to be held in durban for the next 3 years surely is a sign that thats where they want it? they would surely prepare in CT if they wanted it there...esp when u dont even have the needed tennis facilities.

OK guys...here's a long overdue update from Durbs
1894 piles have been shoved in the ground. The bases of the arches have been completed. 2 cranes are up. And construction is well underway. She shall start to rise soon! Pics ASAP, will only show the cranes tho at this point. Afripile lays a solid foundation Barbara Cole A unique concrete pumping machine has been used for the first time in the country at Durban’s new soccer stadium site. The special system which pumps concrete up through the middle of the drill bit faster than other methods, has been specially imported by Afripile, the Phoenix (Durban) based company which has been doing the piling at the main Durban stadium since October. Afripile have bought 9 of these machines. The piling operation has just ended and the equipment is now on its way to the next job: a soccer stadium in Nelspruit, another venue for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. About 328 tons of steel and 25 000 tons of concrete have been used on the job with a total of 1894 piles driven into the foundations. The Group5/WBHO/Pandev consortium started the earthworks last weeks. KZN premier S’bu Ndebele and city manager Dr Mike Sutcliffe visited the stadium site recently with a delegation from Italy – the reigning world champions. Italy is considering using Durban as the base for its team during the 2010 world cup.

Durban name changes reach Point of no return
March 23 2007 at 12:15PM By Hlobisile Mbokazi and Heinz De Boer Durban has taken the next step in renaming its first batch of roads at a walk-about in the city centre. Mayor Obed Mlaba and a procession of ANC councillors, dignitaries and the media are expected at the official unveiling of the names that will culminate with a bash at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) on Friday On Saturday the new R2,4-billion 2010 stadium will be officially named the Moses Mabhida Stadium. 'We are not changing every street name' The eight prominent roads identified for renaming, which include the M4, Point Road and Victoria Embankment, had their new road signs posted earlier this week. The ceremony rounds off a political renaming process that has from the outset been fraught with controversy, with the Democratic Alliance claiming the public participation process was flawed. The council's ANC majority, however, approved the two-stage renaming process, making the renaming of more than 200 Durban streets a reality. Deputy Mayor Logie Naidoo said: "We are not changing every street name. We have chosen great freedom fighters to reflect our political history." On Friday the council will launch its public awareness campaign aimed at sensitising the public to the personalities who are now reflected on the new street name boards. The first fact file details the life of Albert Luthuli, who joined the ANC in 1945. He was elected as the Natal provincial president of the organisation in 1951. In 1946, he joined the Natives Representative Council and in 1952 helped lead the Defiance Campaign. |

That's what I said, Mo! Seems like every second Tom Dick and Harry in this country is going to be honoured in this way. I can just see the headlines now... "Moses delivers the testimony" Who was he/she anyways? And another thing, would someone mind starting a thread on Soccer City? For us Jo'burgers? I hear things are going swell there. They building a cement processing plant there and everything. Wish I knew more though!!!

Well...i liked King Senz...but IFP will march since the zulu's are being sidelined.
Mo...we still dont have the name of the Cape Town Stadium. Since the Durban council were going to call the present durban airport Moses Mabinda, and changed it to the stadium. Maybe they will do the same in cape town and call it the La Guuma stadium...
