TORONTO: The Uptown (art deco condo)

The Uptown Residences

City: Toronto, Canada
Neighbourhood: Bloor / Yorkville

Use: Luxury condos, retail

Floors: 48
Height: 158 m / 518 ft.

Just another sign of Toronto's growth and densification, this luxury condo tower has been proposed in a downtown neighbourhood which as of late has seen many condo towers and proposals. The building is planned to be faux art-deco as shown below, with a very imposing and substantial look.

The developer is the Pemberton Group.

I would love for this tower to go up, but sales have been slow and Crystal Blu won't help either.

I think it's funny how the podium/base looks sooo simple and massive in behind that raggedy strip of old buildings in that last rendering, haha...

But yeah, I really do hope it gets built. CrystalBlu is right near it, right?

This is like a carbon copy of the GE Building.. but only the slim side. It's a great design and would fit quite well. I'm only disappointed with the sales and to a lesser extent, the height.

Not to rain on anyones parade here, but Art Deco condo?

Let's be serious now..it might take some inspiration from the Art Deco movement, but at least write.."Art Deco inspired"..or something!

That said, i am looking forward to both the Uptown and Blu going up as well- should add some needed density to the area..

well One bedord (right near it) is going up for sure. Its 78% sold out...
one bedford is 78% sold according to mike in Toronto..

"78% of released suites (200 released out of 264 total) have been sold at nearly $600 per square foot (subject to 10 day rescission period). Most of the units are fairly large in size.

Occupancy is summer 2009. "

Well I didn't want to make the thread's title really really long. In my first post I refer to it as 'faux art deco' and if that's not good enough for you, then have a nice day.

I really hate this building. I dont like buildings trying to immitate a previous generations style. A building in 2006 should follow current styles.

Well, what would be the point...as we all know we are no longer in the deco period, any new buildings would have to be neo-deco by default.

I guess the ancient greeks would be pretty pissed off then eh? Coming up with an actual unique architectural style is neither as easy or as common as you might think.

Back on the subject of the tower.. funny how its not even "uptown", couldn't they have thought of something better to call it? but regardless its an awesome building, the likes of which I hope to see more of around here.
