Look out, I'm coming :)

w00tar, I sold my house and I'm coming up this week (today actually) and looking for apartments.

I've never rented an apartment on my own before, so i'm a bit nervous and clueless. I have a friend moving into the bayview and sheppard area. I'm going to check it out but I honestly dont know which is a good area and a bad area.

I know I asked this before, but where do I want to avoid and where should I check out? I'm looking for a 2 bedroom apartment not directly in concrete jungle, I'd like a little green around me and if possible, I'd like to be on the metro line.

Hey pebbz, that is amazing news!! Congratulations and I hope you did well on selling the house. My suggestion for areas to hunt in would be The Annex, or maybe around Queen St West, King St West, or Dundas St West. Exciting to be starting a new chapter!

Anything within the old boundaries of Toronto is a pretty safe bet (with some exceptions).

Which reminds me, The BeachBeaches is an excellent idea! Close enough yet definitely NOT in the concrete jungle. That actually might be the best first choice to hunt.

OK -all the great parts of town cost a fortune!
Parkdale - no so great, not so bad. Not near the subway... Bit of crack, urban grit / ex -cons' etc. but the area is on the rise. CHEAP! Well under $1000 a month- $750 and you're OK. We all can't live in Rosdale. There are places to go out (Duffrrin Gate pub on King, all sorts of places along Queen.)

I would suggest trying to be in walking distance to the subway. Bloor, from Bathurst to Keel is "OK" - not so great, no so bad, etc...

The big question is...how much are you willing to spend?

You've got to be kidding!

My brother took me around the city today. The beach(es) are pretty but way too busy, lots of traffic, and probably way too expensive. The annex looked really nice and so did rosehill, and young and york mills. However, I havent checked out any apartments there yet. The one building I have checked is up near Bayview and Sheppard. It's a nice big 2 bedroom apartment 1050 sq feet with utils included in that price range. Plus my friend is moving into that building, and it'd be nice to be close to her.

well if you want 2 bedrooms for $1500/month, and not be in a terribly urban place, that Bayview and Sheppard place sounds good (no way you could get a place in the Annex or Rosedale that size for that price). I know a dude who lives around there, and its decent enough, its on a subway line as well, so its convenient

Bollocks.

Last year I rented a 3-bedroom unit in the Annex with two buddies for $1850/month total. The unit was relatively large (3 full bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, and separate living room), and in modest condition. I'm sure you can easily find something with 2 bedrooms to rent for $1500/month.

Yonge & Eglinton. It's has the best of everything- close to public transportation, 401, amenities, recreation, etc. Furthermore, there are a plethera of quality rental apartments for rent in the area. Bayview & Sheppard is far too suburban for you.

Yonge & Eglinton is hardly the concrete jungle. It's probably one of the most liveable areas in the city. Also consider Forest Hill and if you don't mind a slightly more remote location, High Park.

Don't live too far out in the burbs... Yonge and Eglinton or Yonge and Davisville are lovely and give you a feeling of space. I live right downtown and pay $1250 for a two
bedroom + balcony apartment in a standard 60's 10 storey type Greenwin building.

You said all in. Sadly, it costs me about $1500 a week to live in this city. But I also have two kids and a ten year amortization on a my mortgage.

I have a friend with a one bedroom in the Beach for $1K, and it is on Queen St.

I would stay away from Bayview and Sheppard. But that's just me.

Y&E is really just downtown lite....sounds like this guy is looking for something a little less urban (which won't win you too many friends on this site).

But the burbs are just too depressing...too much to sacrifice to be away from the "concrete".

My suggestion is High Park Village. Got your leafy, century old streets and trees, and the high density apartments don't convey the concrete jungle feel at all. You have the subway right there...High Park right there...Bloor West Village right there....and not much concrete to be seen.

And Minto took over a slew of those highrises, so they are at "condo" quality. They aren't real cheap, but I think $1500 will get you a 2-bed, in older apartment buildings that are generally bigger than new condos, and in a park-like setting.

AND....you don't have to move to some depressingly suburban fringe of the city where you can't take a short walk to get milk or sushi.

^ yep, I second High Park.

In fact, I'll likely be moving back there myself this September. If you're willing to house hunt for a bit, you can find really solid deals too.
