24pc of the world's cranes are in Dubai...

Hey. Well some of you already know this but to many others, this is new. Regardless, even if you knew the percentage, now you'll know the exact number of cranes in this city. Enjoy .

Dubai: About 30,000, or 24 per cent of the world's 125,000 construction cranes, are currently operating in Dubai, according to the organisers of the Conmex construction machinery exhibition.

Demand for construction related machinery, equipment and vehicles is expected to continue rising in the Middle East, especially in the UAE due to the continuing construction and real estate boom.

In 2003, the UAE's market for heavy construction machinery stood at $165 million, road construction machinery at $142m and earth moving machinery at $125m. The size has increased by 15-20 per cent since then, said the report carried in a Dubai newspaper.

Annual market demand for used machinery in the Middle East is valued at over $1.3 billion.

Although construction activities in the UAE are concentrated in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the other emirates are not far behind.

"The entire GCC region, particularly the UAE, is currently attracting astronomical investments in the real estate and the construction sectors," said Saif Al Midfa, director-general of the Expo Centre Sharjah, the organisers of Conmex, the exhibition for construction machinery and equipment.

Dubai, which continues to be the centre of construction activities, has experienced an increase in real estate investment from $2.9bn in 2000 to $44bn now.

The number of cranes in China alone will dwarf the Dubai figure. All I can say is that Dubai and the UAE are desperately seeking every possible PR opportunity it can through organisations and the press. I've been to Dubai and seen it for myself. The level of construction is impressive but not as impressive as they make it out to be.

Oh, so much noise!! I swear cranes are an eyesore. Whats to be proud of so many ugly things ruining the beauty of the place? (that's if the place is beautiful).

Well it is kind of skewed to compare all of China to a small area as Dubai.

Dubai and China are following similar infrastructure patterns right now: Build that then populate.

What goes on i Dubai is truely impressive. Let there be no doubt!

Be that as it may, I have a hard time believing that 1/4 of the World's cranes are standing here.

There is an amazing amount of construction going on i China and China just to name two countries.

Furthermore, bustling cities like New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Toronto, Tokyo just to name a few are also building like mad.

WOW! Really?? how lovely! But does that make Dubai a world class city like NYC, London, Tokyo, Paris or Hong Kong?? I think not. What an utter pointless thread. And excuse me, ALtinD, are you saying the construction of the new world trade enter in NY, world financial center in Shanghai, international commerice in HK are just NOTHING??? It's probably gonna cost like over $10 billion to build the whole new WTC complex in NYC by 2011 and you think that's NOTHING??? shit, you gotta have more money than Bill Gates.

Shanghai is probably building more than Dubai in numbers. Several hundred towers at once. Lack of forumers from Shanghai makes construction updates less than adequate.

it was just posted to inform u about the news, since this topic has been raised quite a few times now.

OMG, I was MERELY stating that there is NO WAY that Dubai has anywhere near 24% of the world's cranes. Jeeze. I have already stated that I've visited Dubai. What is it with Dubai forumers saying that the rest of us have no clue as we've never been.... errrrr yeah, ok dude.

Hog wash... I don't believe it for a second... while there is alot of construction in Dubai, to say one city in the world has 24% of the worlds cranes is pretty impossible to believe.
