What's with the whole 'in your opinion!' thing in the thread title? Airport connections are rather factual statistics, not opinions.

IST should have at least 200 destinations as Turkish Airlines position them selves as global carrier and have over 200 routes.

Actually, it is rather subjective. Is an airport with countless domestic destinations, but very few international and intercontinental destinations "better connected" than an airport with a lot of international and intercontinental coverage?

Here is a study about this topic for Europe : http://centreforaviation.com/analysi...-debate-172935

I think # of destinations is not a good connectivity indicator without considering frequency and capacity.

Depending on your definition of "connected" if you mean number of cities or number of countries. Using the countries/territories as the criteria, what airports would come out on top? That would essentially neutralize the domestic market of any one airport. Owing to the size of European countries, airports there may have an advantage!

This is why it's a complicated question to answer. And what about airports that don't serve nearby destinations because those destinations are already served by that city's rail station? Or a city with 2 or 3 airports, with destinations split between the airports? Both of these cities could be well-connected.

I know this topic may be subjective, yes, but, of course, there will be people who will be interested in this topic (including yours truly) since we would like to see how connected our world airports have become today. Even with just 1 flight a week, if it occurs regularly, that destination still counts as a destination from that airport.

Here is one major thing that will cause this question to fluctuate: the number of seasonal and charter routes. Sure, it can increase the total count of destinations served from airports, especially from Europe, but, it is a good question to ask ourselves whether or not we will include them in the count. The main reason being, those destinations are not served on a year-round basis (which may be the question being posed here), and that those cities being served may not receive a substantial number of ops during the off seasons. If you'd like, I'll be happy to revise that question for you so that we can have a clearer understanding of what we're dealing with here.

Not necessarily... San Francisco actually has 3 working international airports plus another one up north that handle commercial flights. And by the way, SFO may be the 23rd busiest airport in the world in terms of passengers, but its network is relatively small compared to other airports of its size (LAX, some 350 miles, 600 km southwest, is much, much busier than SFO).
