Karachi: Satellite Photos

Since we all have discovered the pleasures and delights of Google Earth, I have created this topic for anybody who wants to post some interesting pictures from it.

I will personally be using it to highlight some of the planning issues that Karachi has, so they can be brought into knowledge... apart from just giving interesting satellite imagery.

Enjoy.

ps. I am hoping google earth updates their Karachi imagery with current ones. If anyone wants to write to them about it, please do so. The more requests they get, the better. Same goes for other Pakistani cities.

Tankers in Shireen Jinnah Colony

This amazing view shows oil tankers parked in every open space available in the area: be it streets, in front of people's houses, mud holes, every freaking where! They are easy to spot, but try to find them where-is-waldo-style in areas where you dont see em clearly. I am sure you will enjoy this activity in some spare time. Also, why count sheep? try see how many you can spot in somebody's backyard.

This is a classical Pakistani planning/infrastructural nightmare. Crude oil from this area is carried by these tankers all over Pakistan. If only a large carpeted parking space was allocated for just tanker parking, and they were disallowed to park anywhere else, the entire area would have become cleaner and the traffic would have been able to flow more efficiently. There is even space in the area for such parking but it is not being properly used.

Clifton

This picture shows ALL of the clifton area (to my knowledge at least). From the Schon Circle on the top right, to the clifton Mc Donalds on the bottom center. Shireen Jinnah colony and its tanker nightmare starts on the left.

This picture also shows Boating basin, Bilal Park (zamzama), Do Talwar, Clifton Playland, and lots of other stuff.

Bilawal House

Anybody ever wonder what really was inside those sky high walls of the castle of our beloved prime minister from hell BiBi Benazir Bhutto?
The mystery is solved. This curiosity is not killing the cat.

It is smack center in the picture.

Gizri slums

right in the middle of the well planned and upscale DHA area, pops up this small slum that contributes to its traffic nightmares and is a general eyesore. Gizri.
With a well-thought-out and earnest effort and planning, this slum can be relocated somewhere else. Or it could be re constructed to allow those people to live there after replanning and reconstructing the entire zone and enforcing limits on proper, clean usage.

Dude just be careful not to post pictures of Unknown Airforce bases in Karachi.

I guess Google Earth is getting to everyone now!

Bundle Island

This is the best view of the ever eluding Bundle Island that I could manage to get.

The picture shows that a lot of the mangrove ecosystem seems to have already died out on the island except for the North side. BUT, this island might be having a very sensitive coral-reef ecological system which can be seen somewhat through the waters.

This island has potential to be completely reclaimed (except for the surviving forest) and converted into an upscale buisness and resort area. But this should only be done after thorough studies have been made to make sure that the ecology of the area would not be threatened by this development. Two bridges can be made to link this island to the rest of Karachi from south of Korangi, and the southern tip of the DHA peninsula.

Bath Island

This picture shows ALL of the Bath Island neighbourhood from the PSO house visible on the top right corner, to Schon Circle on the bottom right, and the start of the Mai Kolachee bypass on the bottom left.

I think its high time the Karachi city government put up a decent new digital road map of the city online.

I think this is the last photo I am posting for now. More later. Till then, enjoy.

Define 'true'. That is not the reality of how most people in Karachi live.

yes there are unplanned areas and kachi abadies, because every year 10000 of migrants come to karachi and encroch lands. But still most of the karachi is well planned.
I said karachi mostly look like this.... not how people live there. Living standard is not bad as many people think. It has a GNP of $28 billion and a per capita income of almost $2,000, double the national rate.
