... and also how small is the percentage of people who use public transport. I've been living here for 9.5 years and I have never taken the bus. If not driving my car, then a taxi would do.

Because the hopeless (from the beginning) project you have invested in has stopped, it doesn't mean everything else has.

That's because Dubai doesn't have much public transit. That will change once the Red and Green lines open.

Why didn't you bother to read the discussion that followed the posting of that pic originally?

The shortest distance there is 1/2 mile.

RTA bus service to cover 140 routes this year

By Derek Baldwin, Senior Reporter
Published: May 24, 2009, 16:52

By year’s end, the Roads and Transport Authority estimates that its fleet of 1,693 buses will have made 4.5 million trips along 140 routes delivering 147 million passengers.

And thanks to a new tracking system going online sometime next month, the RTA is set to make the public transport busing system even more efficient, says Essa Abdul Rahman Al Dossari, CEO of the RTA’s Public Transport Agency.

The new AVM or Automated Vehicle Monitoring system will track all buses in real time along all routes on a large screen in a control room, Al Dossari said on Sunday, from RTA’s public transport building in Muhaisna.

“Any bus that is not on time, we will send a message to the driver,” said Al Dossari. “We will start beginning in June.”

On each bus, the driver will stay tuned through “voice and data transfer” to allow control room monitoring staff to keep a constant eye on the efficiency of the system.
“Hopefully within one month’s time, we will be a very good dispatch centre,” he said. “We will be able to see what bus is ahead of schedule and what bus is behind schedule.”

Al Dossari said that buses now “have a very high level of service”.

He noted that in order to boost mass public transport use to 30 per cent by 2020, all modes of transport ranging from buses and taxis to water taxis and the Dubai Metro must be integrated.

Riders, for example, can travel across Dubai in the newer 160-passenger double-decker buses, then link up with the Dubai Metro to complete the trip.

Al Dossari noted that public transport is key if Dubai is to reduce congestion on its roads and highways.

The biggest problem is convincing people to give up their cars in favour of taking public transportation, he said.

“How do we shift people? This is our biggest challenge,” he said.

RTA bus routes by number

* 2005 – 68 routes
* 2006 – 74
* 2007 – 78
* 2008 – 89
* 2009 -140 (projected routes)

RTA bus trips by number

* 2005 – 2.1 million
* 2006 – 2.3 million
* 2007 – 2.2 million
* 2008 – 2.5 million
* 2009 – 4.5 million (projected trips)
