Dubai's transportation system is outstanding! Meanwhile in the US we can't even fund new mass transit systems let alone update the ones we currently have.

Well Dubai has the advantage of having lower labor costs and less NIMBY opposition. That is one of the reasons why Dubai is able to rapidly construct and expand their mass transit system in a short amount of time compared with the US.

Excuse me. I have to ask. That photos of new tramway line. I see in the interior men and women sitting together. There shouldn't be separate parts for both groups?

Nope, nearly all carriages are mixed. However, there is always one or two carriages that cater solely for women. No men allowed

The extension, dubbed Masar 2020 project, will add 15 kilometres in length and seven stations to the line, state news agency WAM reported. Out of this, 11km of the line will run on an elevated platform while the remaining four kilometres will be constructed underground.

Sheikh Mohammed has directed the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to immediately start the construction work of the Red Line extension. The project is expected to be released for tendering in July 2016, RTA added.

Dubai Metro’s expansion comes as the city prepares to submit its final Expo 2020 plan for approval at Bureau of International Expositions. The extension project is one of the various projects that the emirate is undertaking ahead of the mega event.

Last year, the RTA announced that it will launch 35 new mega projects in 2015 including those designed for the Expo 2020. The public transport agency also said that it will be working to upgrade the roads and junctions around the Expo site, while sourcing up to 39 new trains by 2020.

The RTA is also planning to expand the bus network to cover 16 districts, besides improving the service in 19 districts by 2020.

Hydrogen-fuelled double-deck tram on test
21 Apr 2015

UAE: The first of a fleet of fuel cell powered double-deck heritage-style open-top trams is now undergoing tests on the initial section of a line which will serve Emaar Properties’ Downtown Dubai development.

Emaar says the tramway will operate between 16.00 and midnight on weekdays and from 15.00 to 23.00 on weekends, providing convenient and easy-to-access transport around the 200 ha Downtown Dubai site as well as being an ‘exotic’ and ‘fun oriented’ visitor attraction passing landmarks including Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall.

The standard gauge line is being built in three phases which will eventually form a 7 km loop around Downtown Dubai. Phase one will run for 1 km on grassed track in the median of the orbital Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, with three stops serving The Address and the Manzil Downtown and Vida Downtown hotels. The stops will have an ‘aesthetically appealing fašade’ and air-conditioning

Well, never let it be said that sense is something that Dubai puts a premium on. I notice that these are:

A) Not air-conditioned (in ARABIA).

B) Not handicapped-accesible (in the 21st Century).

C) Appear to be operating on a single track for now (i.e. low frequency).

D) Will eventually operate in a loop (i.e. low utility).

E) Do not appear to be compatible with the existing tram system (more expense, etc.).

I think this is a heritage /touristic tram service, not for public transport.

Even touristic services should be designed to allow for dual utility, if not immediately, then in the future.
