There's a mistake that average train speed is expected to be 110 km/h. The maximum average speed for metro system is some 50 km/h. They probably wanted to indicate maximum speed a train may reach.

Wouldn't it be kind of awkward for them to have different classes? The concept for a metro is alien to me. I can see it for long distance trips requiring over several hours because the longer the ride, the bigger the difference in comfort level with different classes. But metro rides are usually under an hour. I personally would feel too embarrassed to pay for Gold Class even if I can comfortably afford it.

The alternative is people not caring about the metro and continuing using their cars for every journey. The Gold class offers to this people a less crowded reason for doing some walk under the scorching sun.

Things happen because of circumstances and in this case the circumstances are different in this part of the world.

It may be alien to you but may make sense to others. I think it seems to make sense on paper, but I'm not too sure about how it will do in actuality. If it works, who knows? Maybe Dubai would have set a trend then!

the average speed for most existing metros are at around 30-40. The operating speeds are at around 50-60.

average speed takes into account stops too. The 110 km/h is... well I don't know what it is. Because to have that speed, the metro will have to operate at the range of 200km/h depending on the distance between stops.

The map, especially the location and naming of the stations is wrong.

The one that I posted some posts back is correct as far as the location and naming of the stations is concerned.

BTW, the 110 kmh is indeed the maximum speed. Average speed will be from 30 to 60 kph

Tunnelling work for Dubai Metro Red Line completed
By a staff reporter

15 January 2008

DUBAI — Official sources at the Rail Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have announced the completion of the tunnelling work for the Red Line of Dubai Metro project ahead of schedule.

Engineer Adnan Al Hammadi, Director of Construction at the Rail Agency, said that the tunnelling work for the Red Line, which was accomplished by two drilling machines (Al Wugesha), started at the Union Square Station and headed for Burjuman Station going under Dubai Creek, and from the Union Square Station towards Al Rigga Station and towards Deira City Centre.

The operations successfully passed under all the buildings located in its path, particularly Dnata building located between Al Rigga Road and Deira City.

The length of the tunnel that connects the Union Square Station to Burjuman Station is 1,479 metres consisting of 986 concrete rings. The tunnel that connects the Union Square Station to the Riqqa Station is 948 metres consisting of 632 rings, while that connecting Al Riqqa Station to Deira City Centre Station is 1,168 metres and consists of 779 rings,” said the official.

He said the excavation for the tunnel that connected the Union Square Station to the Riqqa Station started on April 3 and ended on August 30 last year.

The excavation for the tunnel that connected the Union Square Station to Burjuman Station started on January 31 and ended on September 15, while the tunnel that connected Al Riqqa Station to Deira City Centre began on October 7, 2007 and ended on January 6.

Dubai: First two trains for Dubai Metro have arrived in Dubai from Japan, Gulf News has learnt

The trains have been off-loaded from the ship at Dubai’s Port Rashid and have been moved to storage areas.

"We have achieved a crucial milestone for Dubai Metro Project with the arrival of first two trains on schedule,” said Adnan Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director of Rail Project Construction Department at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)

He told Gulf News that the trains will be used for the trail run which is set to start in late April this year on the test track between the Jebel Ali Industrial Station and the Ibn-e-Battuta Station on Shaikh Zayed Road.

"More consignments of trains will start arriving in June after we complete at least two months of trail run to check trains,” he said.

At least three to four trains will arrive in Dubai from June onward. A total of 62 trains will operate on the Red Line and some 17 trains will run on the Green Line of the Dh15.5 billion Dubai Metro Project.

Each trains consists of five compartments with maximum capacity of 897 passengers in peak hours.

Every train has three classes -the Golden Class, the Women and Children Class and the Silver Class. The Silver Class, which is economy class, will be given three out of five compartments while the other two will use one compartment each.

The interior design of train compartments for Dubai Metro is based on water and air theme.
